Escaping the mess of the hallway and simultaneously very excited that the hallway is a productive mess at last

Wallpaper stripped (hello, evidence of dado rail from the past)

Textured wallpaper gone from the ceiling

Our plasterer prepped the (extremely narrow) upstairs hallway with something called blue grit, which feels kind of trippy

Just look at those smooth curves 🫶🏼

I have been intermittently (and up to now ineffectually) faffing with our bedroom layout ever since we finished decorating, but I think I’ve finally hit on a winning formula. I found the bedside tables on eBay – they were white and gold, but after a good sand I decided to paint them this very pale blue. Kind of a rogue choice for me but it suits the light in here and I think (hope!) the lamps and other bits help the colour lean more grownup than pastel. The tables give us so much storage and have enough heft that they don’t feel lost in the alcoves. The rug came from our flat and is too small for the space so will probably follow the old bedside tables into the guest room at some point, but it’s fine for now.

The footprint of our small bathroom only changed incrementally, but it feels much more spacious.
Our amazing architect @georgie_mann suggested relocating and recessing the sink by stealing some space from the boiler cupboard in the corridor next door. This also provided space for generous built-in storage above the sink and meant we could move the radiator so you’re not risking a minor scorching in a sensitive area as you step into the shower.
Choosing a freestanding corner bath with a curtain rather than a screen made that half of the room feel much airier.
And we kept it very simple with colour and instead added details in the tile shape and layout, echoing the traditional elements of chair rail, picture rail and curved corners from elsewhere in the house.

The final tiles are up, the final coat of paint on the floor is down… I think we can close the washing-our-hair-in-the-kitchen-sink chapter of this renovation

So good to be home, even if that home is 63 percent building site.
Even now, more than three years into working on this house, it’s still a bit of a surprise how much the disruption of renovating one room seeps into the whole house. And a combination of delayed deliveries and zero straight walls means we’re going to be without a shower for a while yet.
Still, at least we have a few doors we can close on the mess now

A house of two halves 🌓
(or maybe one third and two thirds, but the giant mess of hallway rather skews the impression of the ratio)
