“Who is the largest minority group in the world?”

That’s the question @thisisbien co-founder Hung Le posed to the group. I sat and let my neural pathway run its course. It challenged our notions of what diversity meant and how we thought about it, consciously and subconsciously.

It was a day of listening in on various speakers sharing about their creative journeys. And fortunately for me, they’ve been a part of mine.

Hung’s wife @sianeyllc was one of my first mentors out of school. And I’ve been fortunate to work with the talented Limbert Fabian @limbertdraws as well as (the conduit to it all) Chris Vela @cveladesign To see them all in one place was like a multiverse collapsing on itself.

Limbert is was one of the key people behind Department of Wonder @deptwonder an interactive storytelling experience in nearby Sugarland, TX, which is making noise as a storytelling vehicle.

At one point during his presentation a member in the audience blurted out, “You did that? I watched that as a kid,” remarking on an earlier piece he helped helm in his career. I wanted to put my heads in my hands and laugh, realizing I’m now closer to collecting my Social Security check than when I first started out in my career 👨‍🦳

Over dinner, Limbert remarked that it’s been “a crazy journey,” talking about what was next. I told the storyteller, “You really couldn’t write this up,” on how life unfolds.

Hung hadn’t been back in Houston in seven years and remarked how it’s changed so much. I told him in some ways very much so and in others not really.

For his part, his studio is not only pushing for diversity but living it and owning it, warts and all, since its inception. Their latest work includes things for this very app you’re using. In some ways I was hopeful since nothing like this even existed then, much less talked about.

The great psychologist/economist Daniel Kahneman said, "People in their 30s know where the world is going because they're going to do it. I'm in my 80s so I have no idea.”

And the biggest minority in the world? People with disabilities. We may know someone or we may be that person now or at some point in our lifetime. Another neural pathway remapped.
