Day 03: The importance of inclusion and finding your community
 
Morning @panimation.tv, Heather @heytinybones here again to talk about inclusion and community. When I first got into motion design at SCAD, there felt like an equal amount of women and men in my class, so when I got into the industry, I didn't see that the same amount of equality in the office was extraordinary. I felt alone and frankly confused with it all. At first, I thought this is just how the industry is, but I'd continue to go to these colleges are recruiting, and there was a large number of women and gender-expansive coming out of colleges? The real question is, what happens to them? Where are they now? (luckily, things have changed dramatically in the last 11 years)
 
One of my favorite humans, @rachelyonda, felt the same way. We wanted to feel a sense of community in Los Angeles, so one day after who shall not be named became president, we brought women at a coffee shop in Culver City, and the rest is history. That event turned into a group called LIMBS (formally known as Ladies in Mograph and changed it because we wanted to support non-binary, trans, and gender-expansive folks in our community). LIMBS transformed into a casual monthly meet-up where women and gender-expansive would gather, make friends, build a relationship, give each other work advice they would be afraid to ask at work, and most of all to feel connected. Studios in LA graciously open their spaces up to us with food and drinks like Roger, We are Royale, Fellow, Buck, BNS, Artifact, Scholar, and Netflix.  
We took that feeling of being alone and turned it into community and friendship. We are currently on a hiatus (pandemic), but I wanted to make this post to say that communities like @panimation are crucial for our mental and physical health. If you feel like you need community, go out there and create it. Follow our past events at @limbs_la

We fit into one jacket and stood on Netflix’s rooftop for 4 hours and it was great. I love them. Also, Netflix bathrooms are something else.
