I forgot about this work of art from our week at the Joyce! Stephen @iamxstephen and I have a whole lot of vocal reactions during Aszure Barton’s “Join” for @limondance and well, now you get to be in our heads for a hot sec.

Every time I watch this dance I am astounded that these are my friends, this is my family.

So yeah, the overly excited swings of Join, everyone 😜

This past week of performances marked my 10th(!) year with @limondance. I was absolutely spoiled by the beautiful people around me and reminded over and over of why so many of us sacrifice our lives, time, blood, sweat, tears, and dedication to further and preserve this art form. Every single show left me in awe, retaught me the power of connection, and helped to imbue a deeper sense of trust in myself as a performer. How special it is to notice and appreciate change.

Thank you to every dancer, staff member, tech crew, family member, friend, and audience member that brought their energy to the theater this week. We shared a program rooted in love, and I hope that was felt.

The most repeated reaction I met this week was “wow you are STRONG” — I am proud to be a strong woman and partner and recognize that none of the feats accomplished would be possible without my support system. But hell yes, I feel strong! And every day in a healthy and capable body is not going to waste.

“[José] Limón really tapped into the emotional core of these [Mazurkas] and also the constant frenetic shifts of emotions that happen within each one.”

This week, musician @michael_scales_ plays live piano accompaniment for José Limón’s 1958 MAZURKAS, one of two works part of this year’s program and performed in its entirety for the first time since 1964.

Born from his journey to Poland after World War II, Limón crafts a world of exuberant movement and rich musicality as a tribute to his dancers and the indomitable vitality he witnessed abroad.

We sat down with Michael Scales to learn more about what makes the Mazurkas different from Frédéric Chopin’s other pieces and Limón’s interpretation of them.

See MAZURKAS alongside @aszurebarton’s JOIN through this weekend only!
