I often struggle to put into words why I do what I do. While I try to be less self critical towards this I find myself looking back and realizing how much of me was lost along the way, through fear and pain.

Even when it isn’t vivid or clear, to create, to step beyond comfort, and to understand that I don’t need to follow the status quo for my work to be “recognised”.

This month's BDC Labs artist highlight is Lina Khalid (@lina.khalidsr), who recently joined the BDC for a month-long residency.⁣
⁣
Lina Khalid is a Palestinian-Jordanian photographer born in 1991 in Amman, Jordan. She uses analog photography alongside text as a medium for storytelling. Lina co-founded a photo lab and art space called Darkroom Amman (2018), in an effort to diversify the arts and culture scene in her city. Her work Zagloul Elhamam (Baby Pigeon) was published last November as part of the Arab Documentary photography program with @magnumfoundation and @arabdocphotography.
⁣
In her own words:⁣
"I've had a very fortunate experience in this big city, which felt present in its entirety in this space (BDC) that cares closely for the image and people’s stories and memories. This space gave me the opportunity to see myself more clearly as an art and cultural worker in my city, Amman, who aims to create a space that shares BDC’s mission to continue preserving and sharing visual storytelling.⁣
⁣
As for my work as a photographer and lab operator, this opportunity with BDC team has been educational, enriching my knowledge and practice. Especially with using a larger format 4x5, and gelatin silver B&W printing." ⁣
