If you know me, you probably know I love a ceremony. I love a vow. And this last week, a new group of humans came together to make a creative space to listen deeply and devote ourselves to the River and to written words. This was the 5th cohort of @mtnyccollaborative Writer’s Getaway Retreat, and it was a gosh darn delight.

After a few days of morning asana practice, 6 hours of silence/day for writing, soaking in hot springs, and eating the most incredible food, a few of us went into Yellowstone National Park. While there, my creative partner @ciararosegriffin and I had an impromptu ceremony to ritually formalize our shared commitment to support the creative work we wish to do for life. It was a joke and i was also dead serious. It was officiated by playwright @williamlostit , and witnessed by theatre artist and activist @meghanjeanfinn and writer/actor @hadleyactsup. In the ceremony at the Artists Paint Pots (in front of the farting mud pits, so appropriate), he spoke of our work to thicken the creative, “from soup to stew.” Then we went back to the lodge, where our chef served up a gorgeous venison stew. The venison was harvested by my brother @scottmylo and most of the veg was grown by friends.

We were surrounded by excellent artists making excellent work.

I am so full and so tired, not depleted but full/empty. I am home with my family for 36 hours before heading back out for another retreat. This time it’s the 5th cohort of Atha Yoga Immersion+YTT. The Living Yoga Retreat with AnandAshvattha. What an incredible gift to get to have so many ceremonies as invitations to be present, so much love, and so many circles of community I get to play within!

Much of the writing this year seemed to center around grief. And it was sometimes tear jerking, of course, but also huge belly laughs, nods of recognition, and enthusiastic encouragement to stay with it.

It feels good to connect. And even better to connect through service. To see and celebrate the places where we share humanity. To learn to sing our own songs. To realize most humans can sing a tight harmony with one another’s embodied experience IF we spend a few moments listening first.
