Prairie sunsets, limber pine on endless ridges, climbing rocks, burbling meadowlark song, riding through golden aspen. A few of my favourite things.

What's YOUR favourite thing about the prairie? Tell us in the comments!👇 We were visiting our friends at @americanprairie this fall for the Great Plains Conservation Network steering committee meetings that @albertawildernessassociation is part of. It is a spectacular place with bison and prairie dogs and, like Karina says, many types of sage, a key species for the endangered greater sage grouse. We also have some incredible prairie landscapes here in Alberta, that AWA is working hard to protect. We are currently trying to keep the grasslands near Taber intact, despite a push from the irrigation district there to convert it to cropland.

Happy #nationalforestweek !
We hope you get a chance to enjoy some Alberta forests this weekend! We got a chance to be out on our public lands and enjoy the fall colours. Hope you have a better idea of how to identify some of our Alberta conifers after watching.
Remember:
🌲Pine (needles) come in packets
🌲 Fir (needles) are flat and friendly
🌲 Spruce (needles) are sharp and spiky
and as a bonus
🪾Larch are confused and their needles turn yellow and fall off like a deciduous tree, but their branches have nodules all along them.

🚩🚩🚩Native prairie near Taber (southern Alberta) is facing an imminent threat!🚩🚩🚩

TAKE ACTION: Call or write your MLA and let them know that you value our native grasslands and the MD of Taber should not be allowed to destroy 15 square kilometres of native grasslands with irrigation. That’s more than the area of Fish Creek Provincial Park!

Native prairie is AMAZING! It is adapted to drought and can buffer effects of climate change. It also stores carbon and provides habitat for many species at risk. To us, keeping native grasslands intact is a no-brainer. The MD of Taber agreed – they previously promised not to expand irrigation into native prairie. But now they seem to be abandoning this promise by moving forward with a feasibility study for a new irrigation project on native prairie. Irrigation takes water from our already drying rivers, increasing climate change impacts. If allowed to proceed, the MD of Taber would be breaking a promise to protect native grassland and not allow conversion of these lands.

Temperate grasslands are one of the most endangered ecosystems on earth. The Northern Great Plains is one of World Wildlife Fund’s Global 200 ecoregions deserving priority for conservation. They are home to many of Canada’s prairie plant and animal species at risk and provide many ecosystem services including carbon sequestration. The lands in question have been identified as environmentally significant (Vauxhall-Hays ESA) in a study done for the MD of Taber in cooperation with the Government of Alberta. The importance of grassland ecosystems was also acknowledged in the 2018 South Saskatchewan Regional Plan.

Conversion of native grassland for expansion of irrigated cropland would compromise these invaluable and irretrievable assets. Recent proposals for over 100,000 hectares of irrigation agriculture expansion within the South Saskatchewan River basin could lead to the permanent loss of much of our native grasslands.

We love Wild Alberta! And for 60 years @albertawildernessassociation has been and continues to be, a voice for wilderness. Because we must protect these Wild Places for generations to come. 💚💚💚
We've had some fine adventures across Wild Alberta. Some of my best memories were made in the Alberta backcountry and there will be many more to come!

Have you made a donation to Karina's 9,000 by 9 challenge? Link in bio. She is climbing 9,000 metres of elevation this summer before she turns 9 and raising 9,000 for the @albertawildernessassociation to "keep the wilderness wildernessy"

One of my favourite things about repeating adventures is that you notice how things change (or stay the same) across different seasons or different years. This year the aspens weren't quite as green on the Tote Road but the Crocus and cinqfoil were still in bloom! Won't you join us on our next adventures?

Hey friends, I am co-leading two nature and climate-themed sketch walks. Come join us, if you’re free!

•Sunday, May 5th, 1pm, Jane’s Walk at St. Patrick’s Island with artist Carolyn Fisher & AWA conservation specialist Kennedy Halvorson. We’ll have a conversation in pictures about river ecosystems and the #environment. This walk is full up already, but you can find many other excellent Jane’s Walks here. (Click “Join a walk” and “Load more” to see the full menu): https://janeswalk.calgarycommunities.com/join-a-walk .

•Saturday, June 22, Highwood Clearcut Sketch & Hike Day, with artist Carolyn Fisher & AWA conservation specialist Devon Earl. We’ll document the area in south Kananaskis where the Alberta government plans to allow 1100Ha of clearcut logging by West Fraser. Register here: https://albertawilderness.ca/product/highwood-reflections/
