TL;DR: I’m gonna miss these Jews.

It feels fitting that this move coincides with Shavuot, the holiday when we read the story of Ruth, the first “Jew by choice.” (You can just call me a convert idgaf)

In about a week I’ll be leaving my Jewish homeland, the place I became a Jew.

Three years ago, I came to Indy looking for a rabbi who could help me understand the Hollywood Jews I descend from. What’s this whole Judaism thing all about?

I found many answers, many conflicting answers, and even more questions, which, as it turns out, is a very Jewish outcome.

I also found a community bound by tradition, humor, trauma, grief, and stubborn, beautiful pride. I am profoundly grateful to have been welcomed into it.

This Indianapolis Jewish community changed my life.

Here’s that passage from Ruth, or at least, here’s how I remember it:

“Where you go, I will go.
Where you lodge, I will lodge.
Your Jewish geography will be my Jewish geography.
Your Purim musicals, “I know a guy” networks, and synagogue board politics will be mine.

Your headlines will be my headlines.
Your metal detectors, anxiety, and deep hope for peace — here and in Israel — will be mine as well.

Your people shall be my people, (including that one guy who always corrects the rabbi during Torah study)
and your God my God.”
