$4950 to break a lease?! Problems with repairs and maintenance?! Our union organized an action outside of the offices of Daniel Li and SPG Canada. We then took to the streets and headed to a large union demonstration against the government.

Tenants renting from Daniel Li are continuing to get organized with our union and are standing up for themselves. We started our organizing when Saima, a single mother living in a homeless shelter, approached us for help with a $4950 fee that Daniel Li is charging her to break her lease. She has never lived in one of his units.

As a union that is non-hierarchical with no paid staff, we grow our numbers with each campaign, becoming more effective in the pressure we can put on landlords. We are demanding a plan of action from SPG Canada on how they will do repairs, and for them to let Saima out of her lease. We are going to stand up to Daniel Li until these demands are met.

Our tenants’ union is a method of putting forward a mass fighting organization for expropriation and liberation from all social hierarchies that oppress us and rob our lives of meaning, longevity, and substance. We've shown that through direct action, we can claim victories above and beyond what little is offered us today. Join us in this fight! Stay tuned for upcoming actions.

Our union went up against an almost 20% rent increase and WON. Read extracts from the Gazette's coverage of our fight, with precious, sometimes hilarious, quotes from the landlord and his son.

In September, we reached a deal with Lior's landlord: a 0% increase, and the tenants take on their own hydro bills as of October. No backpayments for the past few months, and to top it all off, since there's no increase on the actual rent, future increases will be smaller.

This story has not just been about a fight with a landlord, but of a struggle against the Housing Tribunal and its protection of landlord profit. We knew that if this went to the Tribunal hearing, because of the landlord's renovation costs this year, our members would be facing as much as a 15% increase or higher.

We have shown that through direct action – that is, by combative acts which do not rely on higher authorities – we can claim victories without leaving our fate in the hands of landlords, the government, or its tribunals. We put direct economic and social pressure on the landlord with our picket lines, and postering, and won. This is all thanks to the autonomous initiative of our members & the work that comrades and the public put into supporting this campaign. Thank you again to everyone who showed us solidarity.

Want to fight landlords, build autonomy, and abolish rent? Join our union and help us build a better world!

A week ago was the TIFF WORLD PREMIERE of @reallyhappysomeday and I’m still reeling from all of the excitement. Getting to share this movie with the world on the @tiff_net screen is a testament to the hard work that went into crafting this story. I’m so proud of J and Breton for what they created and so honoured that I was invited to help tell this story.

Shout out to Perrie for always holding it down in the editing suite and to the rest of the incredible crew and cast for their formidable work.

Really Happy Someday has so much life in it I and can’t wait for it to take the festival circuit by storm.
