We are delighted that this book is out in the world and that we were able to celebrate it with a festive launch at New York University’s charming Deutsches Haus last week! A brief description of the book follows, along with select images of the event.

Long associated with the German Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement of the 1920s, Carl Grossberg (1894–1940) is revered for his precise paintings of industry devoid of human figures but vibrant with color. His Traumbilder (Dream Pictures) envision industrial settings inhabited by unexpected creatures, such as monkeys, bats, and birds, which act to destabilize the certainty of such materialized rationalism. Focusing on the rich collection of paintings, drawings, and prints by Grossberg in the Merrill C. Berman Collection, this scholarly volume is the first to fully utilize the Grossberg Papers at the Harvard Art Museum Archives and takes an unprecedented object-based approach. Sudhalter’s overarching essay and the volume’s robust, fully-illustrated chronology highlight Grossberg’s Bauhaus training, his interrelated practices as a painter and interior designer, the reception of his work during his lifetime, and his relationship with the National Socialist regime after 1933.

The powerhouse behind the scholarship on Russian and Eastern European works in the collection is the incomparable Dr. Alla Rosenfeld. In her capacity as Research Consultant for these areas, over the last seven years Alla has completed book-length monographs on artists including Natan Altman, Boris Aronson, Henryk Berlewi, Nikolai Dolgorukov, Nikolai Sedelnikov, and Konstantin Vialov. She has written thematic studies of Russian and Soviet Theater, Jewish Artists, Jewish Identity, and Early Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Commercial Design. She has applied her same rigorous scholarly standards to online exhibitions on the topics of the Visualization of Data in Soviet Russia and Early Soviet Anti-Religious Propaganda (which she is seen preparing above, slide 1), as well as artist’s pages on Jankel Adler, Dmitri Bulanov, Aleksandr Deineka, Vasilii Elkin, Dmitri Moor, and Nikolai and Aleksei Ushin. Not to mention her numerous newsletters on tightly focused topics. To say that we are fortunate to have Alla on our team is an understatement.

Happy 65th Anniversary Dalia & Merrill! They met at the 1958 Worlds Fair in Brussels when he was an American college student and she was serving as an usher at the Israeli Pavilion. They are the loving parents of my best friend since childhood @lisaber9, so we collaborated to recreate their whirlwind international love story in cake form. We had a delightful dinner recently in recognition of the millennials here at The Merrill C. Berman Collection. Our wonderful Designer, Photographer, and Senior Collections Manager, Jolie Simpson, turned 27 years old yesterday and also marked her five-year anniversary at the collection. Jolie started working with us straight out of college and has been nothing short of extraordinary, as many of you know from your communications with her.
We also toasted our Research Assistant, Will Neer, who recently received great news. Will soon starts in a position at the Whitney Museum of American Art as the museum’s Registration Assistant. Will has worked with us since the spring, and his contributions have been many. We will miss him, but are thrilled for this next step on his career path.

These days, between Covid, working remotely, and rotating schedules, it’s rare that our little staff is in the office together. It happened yesterday! The Magical Marlon James–

I met the young Mr. James in Kingston, Jamaica back in 2004 while doing a photoshoot with Sean Paul for @vanityfair; Marlon was our tour guide and connection to the artist. I hoped to photograph out in the streets of Kingston, even though Marlon warned us of the enthusiastic crowds that may become too overwhelming. We pushed on anyway, but of course… he was right. Marlon became a long time friend, and since then I’ve witnessed his incredible journey into becoming a world-renowned author, winning the Man Booker prize in 2015.

Today, we celebrate my friend on the release of “Moon Witch, Spider King,” the second book of the “Dark Star” trilogy and sequel to NYT Bestseller “Black Leopard, Red Wolf.” Get ready for a magical ride. MS
