Excited to see our design for Upperton Studio featured in the @latimes this past week. Lisa Boone writes about the project:

When the couple saw the work of architects Brennan Buck and David Freeland of FreelandBuck at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., they reached out to them in 2018 to design an ADU for their family, including their son Marlowe, now 15. Seeing the architects’ work in a gallery helped them, as Henninger puts it, “appreciate them as artists,” which was exactly what they wanted for an accessory dwelling unit to complement their home.

Because the existing house has a semicircular floor plan, the architects thought a typical square structure would not suit the property. Instead, they created a vertical studio on a slab above the garage, with a pitched roof that, as Freeland says, “floats over the shared space between the two homes.”

Two tall adjoining trapezoidal forms help define the living areas inside. The architects also added terraced decks connecting the two houses, giving the family space to dine, barbecue and garden.

The studio is just 400 square feet, but it features several niches that define the living spaces, including a kitchenette, sleeping loft, living room and bathroom. The large central space has views to the north and south, and the windows are strategically placed to create a soothing cross-breeze on hot Los Angeles days. A table and futon are sized so the space can work as a small office, dining room or living room.

“It seems small, but the high ceilings make the place feel so much bigger,” Leibner says. “The architects made it something incredibly special, and it’s really quite an aesthetic experience to be in there.”

Welcome to my staging grounds for The Curatorial Dept.❣️🎪🎠 Furniture moving to and fro, decor arranged and rearranged, clothes coming in, then (eventually 😂) moving out. The big blue candy table will end up in the shop, but I wanted to keep it around for a while. Definitely for the @latimes shoot. 📸 Candy stripes on the brain because they’re bright, they’re bold, and they inspire play/fun/sweetness. Pretty on the nose, I guess. But that’s how I’m feeling these days, which is better than a sharp stick in the eye❣️🍭

Either I just awoke from a 12-year slumber 👸💤 or makeup artist @lizlash got her paws on me❣️🐾💄So happy I live in Tinseltown ✨and get to surround myself with wildly talented people. Liz Lash (yes, that’s her actual name) and I met at the shop when she was working on @deadtome. She was one of the first friends with whom I bartered; makeup for clothes. Kind of like Little House on the Prairie when they pay the doctor in live chickens. Cut to 🎬 present day and Liz and I are obsessed with one another’s creativity, abilities, even hobbies❣️🫶💕 If you’re in LA, book Liz for your makeup (she does lashes too, ofc!) And if you’re not in LA, then fly her out to work her magic. ✈️🪄✨🎩🐇

I’m going to use the word interstices in this post, so buckle your seatbelt. 😂 Working with Emmy Award-winning photographer Myung Chun and powerhouse LATimes writer Lisa Boone really made me miss producing. They fully embraced me as a collaborator, which was such an honor, and we all riffed off each other’s ideas. You can tell they’re both masters at finding not just the obvious subjects, but the stories in the interstices: the connections/tensions/humor - all the emotional stuff that makes a piece feel alive. Collaborations like this remind me why I fell in love with creative production in the first place, and I CAN’T WAIT to see what we made❣️🤸💫✨
