I sometimes get asked whether a piece is available in better condition — and I understand the instinct, but it's usually the wrong question. The chip on the foot of that vessel, the fade on that shade, the corner of marble softened by fifty years of hands: these aren't the price you pay for buying old. They're what you're buying.

A room where everything is flawless looks like a showroom, however good the pieces are. The eye needs proof of life — one thing that's clearly been somewhere, held by someone, used for decades before it arrived with you. Reproductions can't fake it.

The only rule is the line between wear and actual damage. A softened edge, an old repair, a faded chintz — character, live with it happily. A wobbly leg, active flaking, a crack that will travel — a project, walk away. Everything on the right side of that line makes the room better, not worse.

How do you add soul into a home? For interior designer Lisa Burdus, it’s all about the details that tell a story ✨

In the latest episode of The Edit, @lisaburdusdesign takes us inside her Cotswolds home and shares how she’s created a space filled with personality, colour and collected treasures including 150-year-old Italian tiles she tracked down herself.

She also shares the lessons she learned working behind the scenes on Domestic Blitz, why trust is non-negotiable with clients and how a three-month move to the Cotswolds became a six-year “gap chapter”.

Plus, Lisa reveals what it was really like designing Jeremy Clarkson’s man bar, including the hunt for a decades-old British rock star to bring his vision to life.

With thanks from our friends at @kaboodlekitchen, listen to Lisa’s full episode of The Edit via the link in our bio, iHeart, homebeautiful.com.au or wherever you get your podcasts 🎧 #sponsored

Take a peek inside “The Nature Of Decorating: Interiors Inspired By The Natural World” by @jennyroseinnes today at #theglampad!

As an expert with years of experience in decorating, renovating, and building homes, Jenny Rose-Innes shares her unique insights on how to bring the outside in, creating spaces that enhance our connection to nature in her latest book The Nature of Decorating: Interiors Inspired by the Natural World. The book is both inspirational and practical, featuring stunning images of Jenny’s own home and garden, along with tips and advice from her extensive career.

“Gardens and interiors – and their design – are my two great loves,” Jenny says in the book’s introduction. “Although never formally trained in either, I was able to celebrate both Australian and British design in my two previous books. With this third book, I wanted to continue my celebration of both gardens and interiors by turning the focus on nature. Using my own house and garden as a framework seemed to be the best way to do this, as my love of, and respect for, nature has been at the forefront of most decisions I have made in relation to their design.”

Isn’t it wonderfully freeing to recognise that perception of colour is not universal? Eye structure means some can discern thousands more hues than others. And it can be so rewarding to design our homes by drawing upon the personal experiences that evolve unique responses to colours when seeking to create a sense of comfort and ease.

In SIGHT - one of the six sensory sections in Sanctuary by Design - alongside colour we also consider the dynamic effects of daylight, the careful deployment of artificial light, the value of views and vistas and the impact of biophilic and biomorphic elements, as well as neuroaesthetics.

This beautiful setting is from a project by interior designer @lisaburdusdesign whose instincts for daylight are informed by her work in both Australia and England, from her base in the Cotswolds. Thank you to Lisa for allowing us to include two images of her work.
