Fiction with a Foodie Episode 8! 🍽️🎧

In this week’s episode, I listened to Big & Lily by Lisa Roe while I cooked Roasted Root Vegetable Soup. The blended vegetables add lush creaminess to the nourishing broth, and the fresh lemon, pumpkin seeds, and pomegranate seeds make for a bright and crunchy finish. 🥕🍋 Big & Lily was a spectacular, heartwarming read. Thank you to @harperperennial and @librofm for the free copy!

Ingredients:
1 small- to medium-sized butternut squash
1 carrot
1/3 baby pumpkin (or a couple of parsnips)
Salt
Olive oil
1-2 tsp coconut oil
1 large garlic clove
1/2 tsp ground cumin (plus additional for roasting)
1/2 tsp ground coriander
1/2 tsp smoked paprika (plus additional for roasting)
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cayenne (plus additional for roasting)
1-inch knob of grated ginger
1 pomegranate
Pumpkin seeds
1 lemon
1/2 white onion
2 cups bone or vegetable stock

Directions:
1. Peel and chop the butternut squash and pumpkin into strips. Toss with smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne, olive oil, and salt. Place on a baking tray and air-fry/roast at 425°F until tender and browned.
2. Roughly chop carrots, onion, and garlic. Add to a large soup pot with 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil. Sauté with spices and grated ginger for ten minutes, then add stock and simmer for 10-15 minutes (once the roasted vegetables are done, add to the broth).
3. Pour the soup into a blender. Blend on high for 40 seconds.
4. Pour into a bowl. Serve with pomegranate, pumpkin seeds, and a squeeze of lemon juice.
5. Enjoy!

During our brainstorm this week, Lisa Roe warns her family not to go looking for themselves in her stories. She writes about many kinds of complicated family relationships, and the one we come up with explores the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters. What starts as an outrageous first image becomes a story of rebirth. And we are here for it.

Let's start this side gig for all the therapists out there! What a fun idea. They can help authors diagnose their characters. Okay authors, who has a secret weapon like Lisa? What kinds of people do you have on speed dial to help you with characters (or any part of your writing)? The weirder the better!

📱ARC Review📱

Big and Lily are sisters who lead very different lives. Until Lily’s falls apart. At which point she books a trip for she and Big. Pack your bags… we’re going to Alaska!

This book was the sweetest, most fun train wreck, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I listened to the audio along with reading the book, and the audio was a wonderful complement to Roe’s words. I don’t have a sister myself, but the relationship between Big and Lily still rang so true for me.

Have you ever visited, or would you want to visit, Alaska?

It's such a joy to make up stories with such incredible authors. We learn so much by getting creative with them. Lisa's daughter is a therapist and it turns out to be a superpower Lisa uses in her writing. Tune in Thursday to hear how we take her knowledge about mothers and daughters and funnel it into a story.
