Lately I’ve been thinking about my first railroad apartment on Ludlow Street in Manhattan—I coexisted in this bedroomless charmer with two other people. It was 1996 and we shared an exposed bathtub in the kitchen, and at the end of our block, we would watch Amy Poehler perform every week at the local dive, Luna Lounge. She and her under the radar improv group, Upright Citizens Brigade would perform in front of a a tiny wall to wall audience. The Lower East Side has a shitty, gritty hotbed of creativity then. It was where I fell head over heals in love New York, so much so that what was a last minute summer adventure turned into 20 twenty years of my life. When I hear about/read about what’s happening there now—it makes me ache, but also, having experienced ‪9/11‬, watching the towers fall, and the city rise through the soot in incredible unison, I feel hope this disease has met it’s match. NYC, you are a magical formidable force. I owe so much to this city, but most importantly I am forever changed and forever grateful for people NYC brought into my life. To all of you, I’m sending you love. Stay shitty, and gritty, and full of heart. Stay strong, and most importantly stay safe.
