I’m unsure if I’ll play a lot of these songs again. some of them make me cry too much to be able to sing. then again, I feel it’s another testament to how help from my friends is often all I need to cross the finish line.

until next time ! x Marina

my second album has been out for a month and it wouldn’t have been possible without the loving contributions of friends. I’m so excited to finally get to play this album LIVE TOGETHER tomorrow at @treepeople_org

swipe for some tales →

a personal note ⊹ ࣪ ˖
this project is primarily a solo practice, which is a great pleasure and great challenge for me. having played in bands for so long, creating alone has changed how I approach songwriting and production in more ways I can count. to get to fully immerse myself in dream worlds in the best way I can, learning along the way. it’s scary and therapeutic at the same time, but oftentimes I miss that human feedback of another person.

when a song is being dug out of the archives for a second go, or is stuck in a place I can’t phase out of, it’s an honor to get to hand off the music to a friend - in this case, musicians I greatly admire specifically for their keen ability to worldbuild out of sounds. sometimes all the song’s world needed was a different map, and each contributor’s map has transformed the world inside of it in endless ways

expert worldbuilder and ethereal healer @sonodamusic added flute, vocals and field recordings to two tracks on this album: “Wandering Ivy” and “Ventana”

✧˖° for “Wandering Ivy,” this was a meditative arp track that had lived in my live set for years. I didn’t think it would make it on the album for that reason; what else could I possibly add to it that I hadn’t in 5 years? after being convinced by @pfr_nyc to keep it I knew I had to hand it to a trusted friend. Lisa somehow found the nooks and crannies in an already very full song, and expanded it into a misty liminal space with a soaring spooky mellotron flute.

✧˖° for “Ventana” Lisa worked her magic and did the opposite - an expansive track was made miniature and intimate through her sweet soft vocal loops and textured field recordings of daily objects. she brought the vast blue world of the album through a window and into the living room in such a gorgeous way, terraforming it into a closeup and tender diary moment. her song inspired me to go back and add whisper vocals to a lot of the album, as well as the diary-esque inner

No Wave was a movement of refusal—a refusal to conform—that radiated ever-outwards from its center in New York during the late-1970s and early-1980s to numberless instances of radical experimentation across mediums. It was a movement that covered a short period of time, but whose impact is legendary. In the decades since, the story of the crucial and revolutionary role played by the movement’s women was not told; @adelebertei changed this with her book NO NEW YORK earlier this year, and the event she directed at the Getty (@gettymuseum; Sarah Cooper (@sarahannecooper)) on Sunday, A MOVEABLE FEAST OF NO.

Thank you, Adele, for bringing together this veritable feast of talented and inspiring women to carry forward the voices of the women of No Wave.

Featured were performances by Julia Heyward (@dukaheyward), Felice Rosser (@felice_rosser), Eszter Balint (@eszter.balint), Zoe Hansen (@thez0e), Tammy Faye Starlight as Nico (@tammyfayestarlite) (accompanied by Tara Jane O’Neil (@tarajaneoneil)), Adele’s group Mothers in the House (MITH) with Adee Roberson (@adeeroberson) and Anna Luisa Petrisko (@annaluisapetrisko), and Julianna Barwick (@juliannabarwick) in collaboration with Ikue Mori of DNA.

Headlining the evening were the Bush Tetras (@bushtetras, @patplace1, @sleycynthia, @felice_rosser, and Clem Waldmann).

And, of course, special attention is due to the Maria Schneider Guitar Army, a group of women dressed in nun’s habits reclaimed as “sonic armor” and playing in honor of all women silenced and repressed, our guitars in the modes of Hildegard von Bingen. My fellow Sisters of Perpetual Defiance were: Sarah Register (@sarahregister), Erica Dawn Lyle (@kyaniteeye), Tara Jane O’Neil (@tarajaneoneil), Elaine Carey (@lainecarey), Kai Schaffer (@goodyenta), Sylvia Black (@sylviablackmusic / @sylvia_sees), Eszter Balint (@eszter.balint), Lisa Sonoda (@lisasonoda), and Cheryl Cleary (@cheryllynncleary). Led by our Mother Superior, Adele Bertei.

@adelebertei A Moveable Feast of No at @gettymuseum was everything!!!!! Nothing like women honoring women 🏆 Forever changed being sisters of perpetual defiance in the Maria Schneider Guitar Army. And overjoyed to join @bushtetras for their encore of Too Many Creeps!!!! What a day. Props to the many women who shaped and continue to carry No Wave 🎸

Go read Adele’s 2026 book No New York a memoir of No Wave and the Women who shaped the scene @beaconpress!! And VOTE for positive change ✔️

bu.re_ is the handle of Devin Blair, a Los Angeles-born ambient producer and multi-instrumentalist. In his early twenties, Blair bought a field recorder and began recording ambience, quickly developing a deep interest in music revolving around textures, lush soundscapes, and noise; bu.re_ is the compounding of these elements, placed over a bed of field recordings taken in a multitude of countries— an amalgamation of experiences.

🌿 this saturday 🌿 we are so grateful & enthused to be back home among the many habitats of @californiabotanicgarden for their second annual Native Plant Festival!

we are rooted believers that the natural world often shares models for more reciprocal, communal forms of existence & are reallllly looking forward to sharing this day of music, workshops, chatting with local orgs and artists, and interspecies dialogue 🌀

amidst conversation on biodiversity and resiliency, you can find our living earth stage in the cultivar garden, underneath a great oak tree and hopefully among the fluttering monarchs. we’re so fortunate to have open hearted musicians @paulzlivingstone & @almacielol, @clubdiegoo & @vontiveros___, @alex__wand & @nellejanderson, and two point (@sharadalatika & @calebious) with us for the day to emanate and share their sounds in the garden 🦋

entry is free, there’s food, the day’s schedule & more is on our website, and we hope to see you at the garden wandering through inland and coastal sage scrub communities, chaparral, oak woodlands, conifer forests, a riparian habitat, or just reading a book with the most furthest-west growing grove of joshua trees.

enormous love and gratitude to California Botanic Garden for their incredible work and for their support in inviting us be a part of these beloved festivities 🌻
