🎃✨ A little Halloween nostalgia, a little spooky-season reading inspo. 📚👻

If you grew up loving Halloween movies as much as I did, then you already know that some of them deserve a permanent spot in the rotation!

So, I decided to take a few of my favorite Halloween movies and match them with books that capture that same energy. Think supernatural secrets, haunted houses, dark magic, and the kind of stories that make you want to leave the lights on just a LITTLE bit longer. 😂🕯️

A mom wrote in about her 12-year-old. She loved the Lottie Brooks series, Crossover, Vanished, Framed, City Spies, Roller Girl, and the Gallagher Girls books. She plays club basketball, competes in math olympiads, and loves fashion, lip gloss, and k-pop. She also has about 1,120 books at home and has started calling her mom’s recommendations the Newbery Tragedy List.

My team and I were chatting recently about how stuffy and literary some awarded books can be. One of my teammates said it’s almost like certain book awards are for Children’s Books Adults Like. Many awarded books are also emotionally heavy, tackling big issues that make the stories stressful for young readers already living through an anxious time.

So for this reader, I did my best to avoid the literary recommendations and steer her toward commercial fiction that matches her tastes. Heist and spy thrillers that feel slightly removed from real life, and cozy friendship stories.

#ReadPuertoRican Book Club is back with a perfect Spook-tember read. I got to attend Elle's book launch event at The Twisted Spine and the conversation with Lisa Springer makes me want to read this one even more. thank you to all of the amazing friends & family that came out to support Jarjina’s big day (aka the I Didn’t Do It Launch)!!! especially to my amazing conversation partner @lisaspringerwrites and @twistedspinebooks - one of the most fun bookstores I’ve ever been to!

it’s so easy to get caught up in the madness and pressure of publishing. im guilty of constantly moving the goal posts for my career, but last night I thought a lot about eight year old Elle who dreamed of writing one book. and now I have 5!!!! that’s wild!!!! feeling very grateful for all of the wonderful people in my life who remind me to slow down and take it all in. yall are the reason writing is never lonely :)
