100 years ago, only about 1 in 3 adults could read. Today, almost 9 in 10 can 📚

We’re living through an extraordinary moment in human history in which reading is accessible to more people than ever before.

There is still a huge gap though. About 12% of adults globally remain unable to read and write, and progress is uneven, particularly for women and in low-income countries.

So how can you help improve global literacy?

Put books into children’s homes:
This is particularly important in communities where children have little or no access to books. A study spanning 35 countries found that having at least one children’s book at home almost doubled the likelihood of a child being on track in literacy and numeracy.

Read with children, not just give them books: Talking, storytelling, rhymes, asking questions and reading aloud all build the language foundations needed for reading comprehension.

Prioritise girls and women: Globally, 739 million adults still cannot read and write, and about two-thirds are women.

The Room to Read charity specifically focuses on improving literacy globally, while the Indigenous Literacy Foundation provides original Australians with culturally relevant books. The links are in my bio if you want to help!

I attempted a rainbow and it kinda works? Most of my books have black or white spines unfortunately 😅

I realized that there are so many accounts here whose taste in books, thoughts, reviews, and overall vibe I love and admire so much. My tbr has grown astronomically because of all the people I’ve tagged and I’m sure there are some I missed. Most of y’all read some seriously heavy books so I’m excited to see if you can coax a rainbow out of them 👀

🤍 @thornandalchemy 🤍

The books in the stack:
💙 Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (tbr)
💙 Travels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck 🤍 (tbr)
🩵 Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (read and love)

Enough is enough. YOU GOT THAT? Our gluttony sickens me. There is too much to read and too little time. The Buddha is behind me constantly telling me to chill. How am I supposed to “chill” when this pile is only a glimpse at the unread books I need to get to? I haven’t even included Proust in here. Proust calls me to me nightly. NIGHTLY. He, like, kinda whines. (Mm, me, Proust, and a bottle of white wine…) I know you all know what this is like.

As you can see, the selection is delectable. A poignant musing on beauty and loss in Japan (@gazebo_books); Leonard Cohen’s alluring vulgarity; subliminal thrillers in suburbia (including one by my beautiful friend @shelvesofsamantha); tales of WWII by those who lived too close to it (my Roman Empire); Deborah Levy being too clever for her own good; HARRY FREAKIN’ CREWS!; vampires and debauchery; books are like getting invited into a lady’s bush but for your brain.

So I don’t want to see a single new book on my feed for the rest of the year. NO MORE. If any of you sickos even so much as flash an ankle of book… I’m gonna start swinging.

That was a double entendre.

Q. What's one book that made you ugly cry?

I was tagged in the Solar System tag by the lovely @libraryofanya last month.

Mars (a book based on mythology) - Circe by Madeline Miller

Jupiter (the longest book you own) - The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Saturn (a book with a pretty cover) - Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

happy monday! 🐦‍⬛⭐️🐟📖🐕

thank you @mattsliterature for the animals on covers tag, it’s been an adventure finding out that such a huge chunk of my book collection feature some kind of animal on them! 🦜

this is also an assortment of some of the oldest & newest additions to my book shelf, some were bought abroad, and one of these is a signed copy… can you guess which one? 🐈‍⬛

hopefully I’ll move more of these from the tbr to the ‘read’ pile, but for now at least they’re pretty to look at hehe 🫶

I’ve tagged a few people that I’d like to see complete this challenge as well, but please feel free to make your own animal covers post, I’d love to see what different books we have in our collections! 🐯

26 books for 2026 💌✨

What’s your most anticipated read of 2026?

Here are 26 of the books I am hoping most to read this coming year! There’s a star on the ones I currently own, so those will probably be the first to be read!

Amongst all of these I think I’m most anticipating The Secret History, The Tunnel, Funny Story, and Crime and Punishment. Crime and Punishment I have had on my shelf for several years now and every year that goes by I feel more guilt for having not read it yet 😅 so I’m hoping this coming year will officially be the year I tackle it!

I would love to hear all about the books you’re most anticipating in the new year 🫶🏻

What’s on your Fall tbr? 🍁☕️🍂

Yesterday was officially the first day of Fall, and with it I have my (ambitious) Fall tbr <3 I’m particularly excited for If we were Villains, Madonna in a Fur Coat, and Notes on an Execution! I’m also hopeful that I’ll be able to squeeze in re-reads of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights.

Have you read any of these? What do you recommend I read first?

As I write this I have on my fuzzy socks and can smell the cinnamon rolls I just took out of the oven, hoping the weather here starts to cool down. I hope everyone has a great Fall!
