🌟POETRY EVENT!🌟

Tomorrow, join poet @poemsbymaha as she reads and discusses her debut book of poems, The Pomegranate is a Grenade. Hosted by Literati Bookstore.

Where: @literatibookstore, 124 E. Washington, Ann Arbor, MI 48104

When: Thursday, October 22, 2026 @ 6:30pm

FREE and open to the public to attend. Masks highly encouraged.

About the book: The Pomegranate is a Grenade is a debut poetry collection that examines what it means to grow up Arab and Muslim in the United States, where home is both inherited and continually reshaped. Maha Hashwi draws from the textures of an immigrant household—food shared across generations, religious traditions carried forward, the weight of displacement, and the small, steady acts of love that hold a family together.

Hashwi’s poems move between personal narrative and cultural memory, exploring how identity changes with time, migration, and the stories passed down through parents and community. She writes of resistance, tenderness, and the contradictions of belonging to more than one place, offering readers a vivid look at the emotional landscape of the diaspora.

Honest, accessible, and rooted in lived experience, this collection invites readers into the rooms, rituals, and relationships that shape a life between countries—and asks what we carry, and what carries us, when we call more than one place home

Today is the official publication day for my first full-length poetry collection, Crying My Best. Ten years of writing are in this book, and thirty years of life. Releasing this collection feels like an unburdening, like it might be okay now for me to move into a new way of being.

I’m very grateful to Octavio Quintanilla for selecting my manuscript and working through the revision process with me. I’m also thankful to the poets who contributed generous and thoughtful blurbs: Petra Kuppers, Violeta Garza, Tyler Michael Jacobs, and Keith Taylor.

If you haven’t ordered your copy yet, you can do so at bookshop.org or the link in my bio. The book launch for Crying My Best will be on November 6th at Literati with Nadia Mota, author of La Chiflada, and I’ll be reading at the VersoFrontera Literary Festival on November 14th.

Now I am going to get a matcha ice cream cone and read another Clarice Lispector novel to celebrate 😌💚

@literatibookstore is an incredible indie bookstore, and their downstairs typewriter is the inspiration for my typewriter tattoo. While there I was looking up solid comps for my manuscript. I picked up one of those titles so I can look through it better.
