Hearty accolades to Randy Barry of North Waterboro, Maine, on a super successful 2025 hill climbing season on both his Stock class Yamaha YZF-450R (green, 450 ATV Class) and his highly modified 540cc YZF Big Bore Stroker (blue, Vet ATV Class and Open ATV). During last weekend’s final season event at the Ridge Runners Hill Climb organization’s home base property in beautiful Canaan, New Hampshire, Randy finished 4th and 2nd in the Saturday/Sunday Stock 450 ATV Class. He finished with two 1st place wins on the modified quad on both Saturday and Sunday in the Vet ATV Class, and a 2nd on Saturday/1st place win on Sunday in the Open ATV Class. Randy is a serious, super pleasant and dedicated competitor with decades of racing in his history. The first quad engine I did for him was waaay back around 2005…. a big bore/stroker CR 500 for a quad chassis that displaced 573cc in an OEM cylinder, head and cases. He is well known amongst his competition, respected and well liked as a good man always eager to help others. The first sequence of stills is a winning pass on his modified 540 at Canaan and the second video is from August 24th at the Monson Monster. No background music in this post because that engine running at Monson should be all the music required. Congratulations, Randy! A well earned season of success! Many thanks to the Farnsworth family for making it a fantastic season wrap on a picture perfect day…. See you all again next year!

On a beautiful, dry, sunny mid-Summer Maine day…. from youth to my encroaching fossilization, Crashing STILL Sucks! Unless it’s the “good types” that happen between man, beast, great friends, FREEDOM and great memories of dear souls…. those still thankfully with us and those sadly departed. It goes by so quickly and each second is a GIFT, given only once. Don’t waste even one, my friends. Relish and cherish them all. Have an incredible weekend! 😎👍

This was the custom expansion chamber designed for the CT1 175 Yamaha. It looks fairly unremarkable and normal, on the outside…. but on the inside, it isn’t. It is double wall construction, hiding the actual internal wall paths of divergence/convergence and where they begin and end. I still use this design approach in applications like road racing, where you need big steam for the straightaways at high revs, but still need enough midrange power to “get off the corner” and accelerate hard, but still without an abrupt entry into the “powerband” that can cause sudden wheel spin (and ending up on your butt). Everything is a compromise. This design splits it up without the typical big sacrifices. Some, yes, but acceptable sacrifices for the application. In a nutshell, the front end of the pipe, the ‘diffusers’ with diverging walls, extract or “scavenge” exhaust product AFTER the initial high PSI pulse is diminished. The effective “suction” generated is a combination of strength vs. duration of time. The “suction” also pulls fresh air/fuel mixture from the transfers into the upper cylinder. That’s a very important secondary function! Gentle diverging walls create less “suction” but over longer periods of time. (You have more time at middle RPM’s than at higher RPM’s.). This is needed for the “coming off the corner” part. The converging walls in the rear of the pipe (baffle cones) reflect a “stuffing” pulse that pushes otherwise lost air/fuel mixture back into the cylinder before the exhaust port closes. For top end HP, that reflection needs to be brief, sharp and close enough to the exhaust port to get back quickly. (There is very little time available to do this at high revs). This pipe is a combination of both, but the needed dimensions run contrary to each other. Gentle diffusers create small mid pipe diameters and long tuned lengths. Sharp, steep reflective cones need big mid pipe diameters and short lengths, on relative short overall pipe lengths. Strong, quick reflected pulsation. Internally, this pipe achieves both needs. It works very well. It was double walled to hide the length/diameter locations so everyone didn’t build one.
