"There’s a visual cadence to intense religious imagery that I’m interested in subverting. Once you look at the “halo” of practice that surrounds a rigid idea or belief system, you begin to understand that it is fallible and as a bystander, I can oddly feel a little empathetic towards it. What happens when the algorithm is frozen in time? Our digital identities have become increasingly intertwined with our sense of self. In girl culture, aestheticization online revolves around an tireless cycle of reinvention and performance shaped by commodification. It begs the question: how much of this is truly the real me and how much is performative? Can we even tell the difference anymore? The seemingly ceaseless, glowing, fast-paced algorithmic feed becomes muse. However, in these works, artists slow that pace, freezing the fleeting visual language of the internet on canvas. What’s revealed is a distinct aesthetic phenomenon that exposes the intricasies of digital consumption. Why are girls so drawn to painting horses? In popular culture, the horse girl archetype hovers somewhere between tween girl cliché and the internet meme. With its affectionate and slightly teasing undertone, the “horse girl” is often the imaginatively independent one who wishes to be free with her horse. The recurrence of horses in work by female artists complicates this cliché by inserting narratives of power, myth and play. Here, the image of the horse straddles tensions between fantasy and embodiment, childhood and adulthood, freedom and control. Wheather the horse is companion or object of fantasy, it reflects an instinctual connection to the body and its surroundings. Ultimately, the horse girl takes on a different form here, embodying a playful seriousness guided by myth.
