No matter what I’m photographing, the goal is usually the same: I want to make you smile.

That’s true of my fine art, but it’s just as true when I’m shooting portraits or lifestyle. I’m always looking for the little thing that makes an image feel less perfect and more human. A strange gesture. An unexpected prop. A moment that feels slightly off in exactly the right way.

Beautiful is nice. Beautiful with a sense of humor is much more interesting.

If you look at one of my photographs and smile before you’ve even figured out why, I’ve done my job.

Some photographers are drawn to faces. Others are drawn to architecture. I’ve always been happiest somewhere in between.

My favorite portraits happen when fabulous people are surrounded by spaces that tell their story. A great home is never just a backdrop. It becomes another character in the photograph.

The books on the table. The art on the walls. The flowers that are just beginning to wilt. The way someone casually holds a cocktail, absentmindedly picks up a vintage tennis racquet, or settles into their favorite chair. The horse and the dog playing by the barn in the background. Those little interactions reveal far more than a studio backdrop ever could.

To me, a well lived home is evidence of a life well lived. Great design isn’t about perfection. It’s about personality. And when you place an interesting person inside an interesting space, the portrait becomes about so much more than what someone looks like. It becomes about who they are
