Grateful to be included in this year's "Best of Fall" for Chicago Magazine 🙏🏽 thank you @mottleypr @kevnserna @cosmic_ghost @lizardcarlisle and @z_long for stopping by the studio!

Hard to believe my last solo exhibition in Chicago was in 2017 🤯 I'm so thrilled to work towards my first institutional, comprehensive exhibition in Chicago to cap off this incredible year, and the forthcoming catalogue with the @rensoc alongside the great @kwlund and the entire Ren team, a dream come true.

More details in the coming months, but for now I'm happy to share the full title of the exhibition below:

"The Long and Short of It: An Introduction to Gregg Shorthand as the Amalgamator of Language Systems, Drawing, Abstraction, and Improvisational Gesture in the Work of Tony Lewis"

Opening Saturday, December 12, 2026 at the Renaissance Society.

Our Best New Restaurants list is here! Our estimable @chicagomag dining critic @jdkess ate and ate and ate all over town to find the best newcomers, and named his 13 new favorites.

It’s no surprise to me that Creepies tops the list - as John wrote: “What’s for dinner? Mussels hiding under a cumulus of giardiniera froth, a bubbly gratin of celery root dotted with tender escargot, and a super-crisp sweetbread schnitzel with bright, pickley sauce ravigote. The way meals come together here makes perfect sense while also being totally bonkers… More than anything, Creepies is a pure original, a restaurant that taps into the soul of Chicago.”

The whole list is comprised of bangers - it’s been a great year in dining, with openings like Atsumeru (#2), which serves a Nordic-Japanese tasting menu, Mahari (#7), which delves into cooking of the African diaspora, and Noodles Party (#8), a Thai eatery that’s a nightly party. Our 50 Best Restaurants list is here! This is our first overall best restaurants ranking since 2018, and dining critic John Kessler and I approached this task with the aim of finding restaurants where the food is delicious, the service is warm and welcoming, and the experience offers value. These spots also have a special something - that intangible feeling that sets the very best places apart.

We started with a list of 175 restaurants and began whittling it down over a period of months and so, so much dining out. We went to fine dining restaurants, food courts, taquerias, burger joints, and pizza spots. We explored Chinatown and Asia on Argyle and neighborhoods all over the city. We wanted restaurants that offer a range of cuisines and a range of price points - that’s what dining in Chicago is all about.

We were unanimous in our decision about the top spot - @chefsarahjayne’s @monteverdechi. I went back on Saturday and that visit confirmed its place on this list - the food is thoughtful and tasty (I always get the redfish, burrata and prosciutto, and whatever pasta catches my eye), the service fun and friendly, and the drink program great. The restaurant hummed with happy diners.

But this is a list of 50 great spots and I hope you’ll go explore them all. You could start with biscuit sandwiches at @rouxdiner (#38), grab birria tacos at @birrieriazaragoza (#26), and have a cozy French-Canadian dinner at @dearmargaretchi (#9). Or, get a pastry at @daisieschicago (#37), ribs from @lemsbarbq (#27), and finish the day with modern Korean BBQ at @perillafare (#24). There are more wonderful restaurants in this city than we could include here, and each of us had spots we love that did not make the list. 50 is a tiny number in a city with so much great dining, and I hope by narrowing it down to our favorite spots to eat now, this guide will help you eat well all summer.

You can find the ranked list at chicagomag.com and in print in the August issue. We also have an issue on newsstands all summer - I hope you’ll pick one up and look to it when you’re you’re seeking a great meal.

Our special summer issue, Chicago’s 50 Best Things to Eat, is on stands now! These summer food issues are always a challenge - HOW do you only pick 50? - but the contributors brought tons of great ideas and we put together a fun list that I think speaks to dining out in Chicago right now (only rule: no tasting menus; you have to be able to walk in and order each dish a la carte).

We have a wide range of bites, from the catfish po’boy at @daisyspoboychicago to the steak tartare at @obelixchicago to The Bear chocolate cake at @loaf_lounge. We have classic favorites too, like Pat’s sausage pizza, Dave’s Red Hots dogs, and more. The issue will be on stands through the end of August, so please be sure to pick up a copy!
