🔊🎶 A visit to the #CraightonCoffeeEstate in the #BlueMountains of #Jamaica, just north of #Kingston, where the elevation brings a cool breeze. The Great House itself is a Wes Anderson-esque heritage home built in 1805, once used for Jamaican dignitaries—but now holds the Japanese-based Ueshima Coffee Company, whose founder helped cultivate Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Currently, the master roaster is Alton "Junior" Bedward, who does tours and lectures about his coffee—regurgitating facts he's said many times before, how Blue Mountain Coffee is alkaline (as opposed to acidic), making it "the best coffee in the world." However, he lights up when I jokingly ask what music he listens to while roasting, which spawns a whole conversation about how good music makes you work better—and in his case, #roast better. One of his favorite jams to roast to: "Formidable" by Stromae (as well as Coldplay's cover of it). After showing us the roastery in the estate's pool house, he gives us a tour up the hill where 680 coffee plants spawn the seeds (beans) for his coffee—and there's a hilltop vista where he mediates with Kingstown down below. — #IrishTown, Jamaica. 🇯🇲

🔊🎶 #RainDontStopRum: The second annual #JamaicanRumFestival, a celebration of the island spirit with tastings, games, and a blending competition with #AppletonEstate master blender #JoySpence, kicked off slow with a rainy start, but things started going once the food, music, and #rum (and airhorns) started flowing. — #HopeGardens, #Kingston, #Jamaica.

🔊🎶 Three Little Patties: On a taste test of #Kingston's three main chains that make #JamaicanBeefPatties, it was hard to decide a true winner. #JuiciPatties' crust is flaky and crisp with a #beef filling that's spicy but not overly. #Tastee has a doughier crust which has more flavor, and the filling is comparable, if not just a little spicier. As for Mother's... as our local guide Cherée Morris puts it bluntly, "No one likes Mother's, but it's okay to have if you're waiting for the bus." George Shakespeare concurs; he's a "#JuiciBoy." Mother's was overbaked with a crust that was thick and crunchy, not delicately flaky or doughy. The filling was just okay. In conclusion, for me, I think I'm a #TasteeBoy if I had to single out one. 🤷🏽‍♂️ — Kingston, #Jamaica. 🇯🇲

🔊🎶 For one of the best #Ital #corn soups in #Jamaica, just head to the side of the road, on #SpurTree hill in the rural community of #Eglington, where Oral "Wayne" Powell has perfected a recipe with #peanuts—so delicious it's made him a local celebrity. This "#cornsoupman" serves up his famous #soup, with the aromatic smoke of a pimento wood fire, to pitstoppers yearning for (or discovering for the first time), his steamy concoction of corn, peanuts, pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, scallions, thyme, scotch bonnets, cho cho, coconut milk, and other ingredients he keeps secret. One of my best soup experiences ever. 👌🏽 — #SpurTreeRoad, #SpurTreeHill, #Jamaica. 🇯🇲
