Earlier this summer, photographing Women Artists’ Art Week 2026 - opening with WAAW’s 5th anniversary celebration and continuing across a week of exhibitions, artist talks, studio visits, gallery tours, poetry and events around London.

A wonderful programme bringing together women artists, curators, writers, galleries and the wider art community — and a pleasure to capture some of the people, conversations and spaces that made up the week.

Where chaos, flesh, fantasy and abstraction collide. 🎨

Step back and the image appears. Move closer and it falls apart again. Big canvases, wild brushwork, and paintings that refuse to sit still.

Bodies dissolving into lush foliage, animals hiding within the paint. Cecily Brown (aujourdhuirose) has spent years returning to the natural world as a kind of formal playground—where figures slip in and out of view.

For her first UK institutional solo show since 2005, Brown built a group of paintings around Serpentine’s (@serpentineuk) own backyard: Kensington Gardens, a park she’s visited since her student days in London. One grouping in particular takes inspiration from a jigsaw puzzle: a fallen log bridging a river. Through her characteristic process of repetition, she reworks the image across scales, palettes, and formats until the log barely resembles its origins. That evolution is the magic of Cecily Brown unfolding before your eyes.

Elsewhere in the show, her drawings and monotypes lift characters from Beatrix Potter and old Ladybird books, using animals less as illustration and more as a way to slip around the human subject entirely.

This is an artwork you can actually step inside of.

Pénétrable BBL Jaune, by Jesús Rafael Soto, is made from 4,000 suspended yellow PVC tubes hanging from a steel framework.

Soto, born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela in 1923, was one of the pioneers of kinetic art. He created his first Pénétrable in 1967 and went on to produce more than seventy versions in different sizes and colours over his career.

For Soto, the viewer was always central to the work. Walking through the piece activates and transforms the space, completing the artwork through participation.

Unit spoke with Lizzie Carey-Thomas,(@lizziect5 ) Chief Curator at Serpentine, about Soto’s vision and why participation is at the heart of this iconic kinetic artwork.

In memory of David Hockney, a look back at his most ambitious work ever: 80 meters of Normandy.

Lizzie Carey-Thomas (@lizziect5), Director of Programme & Chief Curator at Serpentine (@serpentineuk), guides us through ‘A Year in Normandie’. Conceived over twelve months and inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, Hockney painted directly on his iPad while his Normandy studio was still under construction.

Now exhibited in London for the first time, this monumental panoramic frieze captures the changing seasons at his former French countryside retreat.

The exhibition also brings together his most recent series of paintings from late 2025, comprising five portraits and five still lifes. They depict those closest to him, alongside explorations of different abstract painting styles.

WAAW’s Must-See Exhibition of June 2026!

WAAW World was very happy to host an exhibition tour organised together with Serpentine and led by Lizzie Carey-Thomas, Chief Curator and Director of Programme at Serpentine, offering a guided introduction to Cecily Brown: Picture Making during Women Artists' Art Week 2026.
This special curator-led visit offered us an opportunity to explore Brown's practice within the context of the exhibition and gain insight into the ideas and processes behind the work, while reflecting WAAW World's commitment to increasing the visibility and recognition of women artists across the global art landscape.
