Here’s Sean and I.

30 years after we played together in a band called Head Cleaner.

Grotty hardcore, crusty punk. As a tribute to guitarist Tom Poulson I have reissued our 7” No Truth on Solar/Sonar and it is out today, everywhere.

No Truth still rages. Drummer Bird pushes the tempo out past my abilities and it blurs into abstraction at times, white hot. Tom’s guitar playing is razor sharp and rusty, like the strings on an old Cimar that I ran home to find on the day we recorded in 1995. Sean, who started out drumming and singing in Head Cleaner drove so much of it and his lyrics and choices still sound fresh to my ears in a genre that can be scared stiff by convention. I want to thank Sean for his enthusiasm and assistance in putting this release together. @tasalco too who released a cassette edition in the 90’s.

This isn’t a 7”. It’s an album of 12 songs played at warp speed compressed onto a smaller format. You play it at 33rpm.

I hope Tom is proud of this and people get to sit in a room and be with him for a while. I can hear him in this recording and I hope his friends can too. Rest in peace Pulley.

Lyrics Last.
Always the most labour intensive part of writing music. Paper and pen and hours upon hours of slog. The Nation Blue rehearsed for months in the lead up to recording Damnation. And played live a lot around the country with Magic Dirt, Girls Against Boys, Hot Water Music, 28 Days, The International Noise Conspiracy, The Icarus Line, The Bronx, The Mark Of Cain, Mindsnare and Sommerset. Recording at Metropolis under the blinking red eye of expensive sessions produced tense results. But also meant that all 15 songs were largely recorded in a week. So without further excuses, it was time to commit words to music and add the overdub sparkle to the brutalist tracks laid down.
Guests on Blueprint For Modern Noise were non-existent. Not one. Guests on Damnation were minimal and reserved largely for large loomers. Linda Johnson from Little Ugly Girls was the stone church on top of our Holy Mountain. When I write songs I hear Linda’s voice in my head as a talisman for how intense it needs to be. So @ljdacio graciously agreed to sing on two songs on Damnation; Van Dieman and Solar/Sonar. But instead of screaming until failure, she crooned through the tracks. The song Solar/Sonar became guest central. Scott McLoud from @girlsagainstboysofficial met Weston in New York City a month after initial recording and laid down vocals on a rooftop at twilight while the city bustled below. The final component of Solar/Sonar was a choir comprised of Tasmanians and excellent mainlanders whom The Nation Blue had spent the most hours with. Adalita and Raul from @magicdirtofficial , @ljdacio again, Mike Noga (who also features on To Return To The Sea…but more on that later), Liam and Ben Andrews and Rohan Rebeiro from @meine_diskothek precursor Heartfelt Self, Lewis Boyes from The Breakdowns, Alpha Males and later St Helens, Gareth Edwards from all timers Sandro @croncrete , Max Kohane from Far Left Limit and now @facelessburial and Internal Rot, Marika Fengler from Modern Warfare, @lauramacfarlanemusic from Ninety Nine , @sleater_kinney and later Lee Memorial with Lyngcoln.
