“So It Goes” continues our longstanding commitment to accessible, thought-provoking public art. This season, we’re proud to unveil two new site-specific installations: “Cambaridae” by Lauren Walkiewicz (@lmcmansion) and “Yearning II” by Jon Roberts (@jonmichaelroberts). Both works expand on our mission to integrate contemporary art into the fabric of the Wassaic community and landscape. Learn more about the artists and their inspiration below. You can see their work in-person at Maxon Mills through September 13th every Thursday-Sunday from 12-5 PM and both works are available for purchase!

“Cambaridae” is a statuary fountain inspired by the crayfish that reside under Calsi’s general store in Wassaic Creek. During Lauren Walkiewicz’s residency at Wassaic in June 2024, she would pass by the creek on her way to Maxon Mills, and as many as 15 crayfish could be visible in the creek along the way. This installation is a love letter to the creek and the creatures that reside there. The fountain’s forms draw from both native and invasive crayfish species found throughout New York State, alongside AI-generated imagery. By collaborating with AI to reimagine these creatures, the work ultimately blurs the boundaries of authorship and natural formation, questioning the role of human interference in reshaping the wild.

Jon Roberts is a Vermont-based artist whose work explores the boundary between object and image. With a foundation in both physics and art, he distills figurative form into simplified structures, investigating how patterns emerge from matter and how absence shapes presence. “Yearning II” explores themes of perception and transformation, using negative space to create the illusion of a face emerging from rhythmic linear forms.

Much love to @devrafox @kitsch_witch @jackieslanley @lmcmansion @rosalieglsmith for the journey we took to get here and big thanks to the @all.st.nyc team for saying yes to this show concept and bringing it to life with me!

Thank you Seph Rodney (@sephsees) and NY Times (@nytimes) for your thoughtful coverage of the current exhibition Pit of Desire, Garden of Prosperity, curated by Lauren Hirshfield and featuring Devra Fox (@devrafox), Kat Ryals (@kitsch_witch), Jackie Slanley (@jackieslanley), Rosalie G. Smith (@rosalieg|smith), and Lauren Walkiewicz (@mcmansion).

Rodney writes, “For this group exhibition, artists were asked to imagine a future in which humans, plants, animals and machines merge in response to all the pressures we are already witnessing: the mechanized implants housed in fleshy bodies, existing species mutations and a slowly unwinding ecological ruin. The curator Lauren Hirshfield assembled five women who make these organic and mechatronic amalgamations seem both possible and sensuously otherworldly.”

See the exhibition through August 30.

Join us for an evening of drinks and conversation on Tuesday, August 19, 6:30-9:00pm at Supper Social x All Around the Table, a collaboration between Lauren Hirshfield’s event series and the gallery’s artist dinner series. Tickets at the link in bio.

A curator led walkthrough will take place on Tuesday, August 26, 7-8:30pm.

Join us tomorrow, August 7, from 6-9pm at All Street Gallery’s Chinatown location (119 Hester Street) for the opening of Pit of Desire, Garden of Prosperiy, featuring Devra Fox, Kat Ryals, Jackie Slanley, Rosalie G. Smith, and Lauren Walkiewicz. The exhibition is curated by Lauren Hirshfield.

Across all five artists’ works, our reality is merged with speculative fictions and mythological worldbuilding. The diverse tools, accessories, and mediums
employed in this exhibition hint at the treasures and traps of a transformed world order. In Pit of Desire, Garden of Prosperity, distinctions between fauna, flora, machine, and byproduct have dissolved into symbiotic relationships beyond current paradigms. The exhibition sheds the illusion of human dominance and opens portals to collectivist futures built on interdependence and interconnectedness, not control.

Other supporting programs include:
🥂 Supper Social x All Street collaboration on August 19, 6:30-9pm
🖼️ Curator led tour on August 26, 6-8pm

More details to come!
