Times have changed, pun very much intended, from watches purely serving the function of telling time more accurately to now being an aesthetic choice, either as a center piece of an outfit or an extension of it, an accessory, a necessary detail. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a flashy, expensive, massively sized piece, as most are opting for dainty, be it rectangular, square, oval or asymmetrical, the more interesting the shape the better. Which has proportionally led to a rise in popularity in vintage watchmaking because this is where these shapes, silhouettes and character in watches is found.

This “character” in a watch is an in-expensive flex, an expression of taste. Most of us were born after the Quartz crisis, so we were never exposed to mechanical watchmaking and are now able to educate ourselves and go down these rabbit holes to discover these elegant pieces.

Even higher-end markets have reflected this, with the “geezer watches” movement, seeing the revival of watch references that were overlooked during their time, some even scrapped for their gold content instead of the beauty of the watch. This is also signalled towards an appreciation for “quiet luxury”, something to be recognised by another of equal taste as opposed to something loud, that is begging for eyes.

The best part of all of this is the elimination of gender as a way to categorise watches and rather the use of ‘small wrist’ vs ‘big wrist’ watches, opening up the options for a lot of people in terms of design, shape and sizing on the wrist.
