📍 IDSov Event at #ClimateWeekNYC

Building on last year’s inaugural Living Data, Living Lands, this year’s Climate Week convening will center the question that the Global Indigenous Movement has been addressing for decades: How can Indigenous communities control the AI infrastructure itself?

This gathering engages AI, which, left unchecked, could extend extractive logics that absorbs material without attribution, provenance, or consent.

Panelists will discuss and celebrate infrastructure builders around the world who are reimagining systems as a relational, living practice tied to land, kin, and responsibility.

Speakers include: Jane Anderson, Eve Tuck (Unangax̂), Suzanne Greenlaw (Maliseet), Carlos Andrés Baquero-Díaz, Erin Robinson, Neil Davies, Maheata White Davies (Raiatea), Mililani Ganivet (Tahiti).

This event is co-sponsored by the NYU Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy, NYU Center CIRCL, Indigenous Data Exchange, NYU More-Than-Human Life (MOTH) Program, Local Contexts, and Indigenous Data Law Lab at NYU.

Register to attend on Eventbrite (🔗 in bio).

@localcontexts, the Indigenous Data Exchange, @centercirclnyu, and @moth_rights at NYU are excited to host the panel “Living Data, Living Lands: Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Biodiversity Monitoring” at Climate Week. The event will be held on September 23, 6-8pm in-person at Vanderbilt Hall, NYU School of Law, Rm 204.

Current threats to biodiversity are tracked by billions of data points worldwide. Technology today prioritizes global aggregation, severing ties between data and the communities who have been stewarding and caring for these biodiverse lands and waters. The pace of technology change is only accelerating this extractive norm.

At 2025 NYC Climate Week, Local Contexts, the Indigenous Data Exchange, Center CIRCL, and MOTH seek to interrupt this cycle. Join us to reimagine and put into practice Indigenous-led biodiversity data infrastructures. Our focus is on building a future that connects and empowers rather than extracts and disconnects.

Speakers include: Stephanie Carroll (Ahtna), Jane Anderson, Lydia Jennings (Pasqua Yaqui), Darren Ranco (Penobscot), Suzanne Greenlaw (Maliseet), José Gualinga ( @sarayakukawsay), Maheata White Davies (Tahiti), Erin Robinson, and Neil Davies.
