“We design buildings that give more than they take, buildings that produce more rather than consume, buildings that heal rather than harm.”

Felix Holland was op vrijdag 2 oktober over vanuit Uganda om te vertellen over het werk van zijn bureau @localworksug. Heb je deze @talksaboutarchitecture gemist? Bekijk nu de videoregistratie via airrotterdam.eu!

The monastery was designed by @localworksug bringing together four clay-brick buildings: a church, novitiate, guesthouse and gatehouse, arranged around three courtyards.
The church features a striking barrel-vaulted roof with glass bottles integrated into the brick arches, allowing natural light to filter into the nave. Across the complex, perforated brick screens encourage natural ventilation, while a secondary roof provides shade, collects rainwater and supports solar panels. A thoughtful expression of sustainable architecture.

Ekyoto restaurant

Two beautiful terraced dining and lounge spaces overlook the hills of Kampala, and at the heart of space, warmth and gathering.

As we kick off construction for this incredible restaurant design, we would like to share the ‘heart’ of the design; materials.

Every material tells a story.

The name of the restaurant ‘Ekyoto’ (noun, Luganda) : meaning hearth; a place of gathering and warmth.

The name of this restaurant is inspired by the clients vision to create a welcoming and warm place of gathering, curated by a palette of locally sourced timber, terracotta, stone, raffia, leather, ceramics, and woven textiles that celebrates the richness of African craftsmanship and the beauty of natural imperfection.
Inspired by the idea of the hearth, the restaurant is designed as a place to gather, linger, and reconnect; a neighbourhood destination where warmth comes as much from the materials as it does from the people who fill the space.

Thank you @32degreeseast for the unique opportunity to collaborate with @localworksug on the creation of this experimental rammed earth wall-speaker: my first architectural maquette that plays with the distribution and transformation of sound through natural construction

A speaker head is set into the back of the rammed earth wall, which muffles most mid and high range frequencies and invites the bass to bleed around its edges, functioning as a sort of sculptural low pass filter. The air column I set into the centre of the wall became a mechanical megaphone or tuning fork at around 500Hz which I amplified via plastic piping, allowing the air to ring at this midrange pitch - all exciting tactile sonic experiments I plan to continue testing and learning more about 🧪

An important element of this exploration for me is that the rammed earth wall is not set with either lime or cement so it can easily be deconstructed and reused 🔄

Special thanks to Ambrose and Sherif from Localworks (pictured here in my studio at 32) for their expertise and assistance in bringing this idea to life 🌱

Felix Holland is an eco-architect from Uganda. Born and raised in Germany, he moved to Kampala in 2004. In 2019, he became a co-founder of Localworks, a multidisciplinary design-and-build collaborative specialising in green architecture. Localworks questions the conventional separation between designers and builders: an adversarial approach, driven by self-interest and contractual safeguards, is replaced by holistic collaboration and co-creativity.

Friday October 2
20:00 - 21:30
at Garage Rotterdam
Tickets: 10 euro

✨️Join us from 6.30PM on MONDAY 14TH September for a site-specific sonic installation to mark the end of Claire Nichols' 32° East residency ✨️

Tune into the construction processes to complete the 32° East Art Centre through an immersive sound installation that captures the sonic emergence of the building through hydrophone, contact microphone and binaural recordings. Claire transforms the treatment of earth and stone into an audio work and installation that hums, breathes and whispers through her studio.

You are invited to experience the physicality of these sounds resonating through her studio walls, doors and windows, and through a rammed earth wall-speaker, developed with Localworks.

The spotlight turns to Kenya.

As the host country of the inaugural Pan African Biennale, taking place in Nairobi this September 2026, Kenya is represented by a remarkable group of confirmed participants whose practices reflect the richness and diversity of the country's contemporary architecture scene. More Kenyan participants to be revealed over the coming weeks.

Stay tuned as we continue building the first edition of the Pan African Biennale.
