Today I drove 30 mins for a €2 pair of nail clippers. 😂

Months into summer living in Tuscany, a very ordinary problem became surprisingly urgent. I needed nail clippers. Easy, right? Except it was Sunday. The village store, pharmacy, hardware store—all closed. The places I’d instinctively stop in the US simply weren’t options.

So Dash and I set off for Asciano for a tabaccheria open until 1pm. After a 30-minute drive, I arrived and thought I’d wasted the trip. The shop looked dark, the entrance covered by old-fashioned hanging beads. It looked completely closed. I almost turned around. Instead, I pushed the beads aside, peeked inside, and there he was—a gentleman quietly sitting in the dim little shop. In my imperfect Italian, I explained what I needed. He smiled, rummaged through a bin, and handed me exactly what I was looking for.

€2. Mission accomplished.

But along that drive, I realized this wasn’t about nail clippers. It’s about learning an entirely different rhythm of life.In America, I’m used to squeezing errands into weekends and expecting everything to be available 24/7. Italy asks something different.

Shops close midday. Miss lunch service, and you wait until dinner at 7pm or later. Little by little, you realize the day isn’t meant to revolve around your schedule. You settle into its rhythm instead. And that’s when the magic happens.

Because we drove to Asciano, we ended up at Locanda Il Paradiso. I had the most incredible zucchini flowers and handmade pici all’aglione. Dash stretched out beside the table while we lingered. Then, as we were leaving, I spotted one of our yard landscapers sitting right behind us. He smiled and said, “I saw Dash.”

That’s Tuscany.

A 30-minute drive for a €2 item became one of my favorite afternoons. Great food. Familiar faces. A reminder that community finds you when you stop rushing.

Maybe that’s the real dolce vita.

Sometimes you set out looking for something simple… and come home with something much better.
