Our hearts have been incredibly heavy with the sudden loss of our dear friend, Jason Gallego, who passed away on September 27, 2026.

Jason was part of the very first Spread location in Downtown Campbell in 2016 and returned to Spread when we opened the Japantown San Jose location in 2025.

The energy and relationships Jason created were unmatched.

When Jason was behind the counter, he wanted you to feel like you mattered. He would strike up a conversation, make you laugh, remember something you told him, and genuinely cared about what was going on in your life. And he took a lot of pride in knowing he made you a damn good sando.

Jason had what we lovingly called the “Gallego Network.” He knew people everywhere. More importantly, he connected people. He helped friends find job opportunities. Helping people genuinely made him happy.

His stylish glasses, his distinct and contagious laugh, his supportiveness, his ability to make friends wherever he went, and most of all, the love he had for his family and friends will be deeply missed.

To help Jason’s family during this sudden and heartbreaking loss, his sister has created a GoFundMe, which his family has asked us to share. The link is in Spread’s bio, and any contribution or share is greatly appreciated.

To honor our dear friend, Spread will be closed all day Friday, October 9, so that we can come together as a Spread family as Jason is laid to rest. 

Jason Gallego, we love you. We miss you. And Spread will never quite be the same without you.

Rest in peace, friend.

If you know San Jose, there’s a good chance you know Lars. 👀

Lars has become a bit of a San Jose staple simply by being Lars. You may have seen him once upon a time at @goodkarmasj or @parkstationhashery, and now you’ll find those familiar glasses peeking over the counter at Spread (or even at @milkbellyca).

The moment you walk through the door, Lars makes you feel welcome. He’ll give you the time of day, have a conversation, and make you feel less like a customer and more like someone stopping by to see a friend.

And then there are the snacks. 😂 Before work—or somehow every time he comes back from a break—Lars returns with a new haul of Japanese snacks from @nijiya_sanjose Nijiya Market to share with the crew. This usually turns into an unofficial Spread taste test: really good, surprisingly good… or highly questionable.

Great meals are important, but it’s people like Lars who give a neighborhood spot its personality.

Viva Calle returns to Japantown San Jose on Sunday, June 14 from 10AM–3PM! Spread will be open at 11:00am!

To celebrate, Spread will be serving up one scoop of ice cream for just $1 during the event. Cool off with a sweet treat, grab an ice-cold beer, and fuel your adventure with one of our sandwiches.

How much cheese is too much??

Burrito Rating: 7/10 - $7.99

They definitely brought the cheese but it was almost overwhelming. They had a lovely salsa macha that was rich and smokey, but their other salsa was okay at best. The beans were seasoned nicely and had a nice texture. If you wanna leave absolutely stuffed, this burrito was massive, although half of it ended up leaking out thru the bottom 😅

Amongst celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year in Japantown San Jose, Spread was deeply honored to receive blessings of good luck and prosperity from the incredible Sun Hing Dragon and Lion Dance Association.

Having just reopened our doors a week ago, their visit couldn’t have come at a more meaningful time. The energy, the tradition, the drums, the lion — it all felt like a powerful reminder that this new chapter is meant to thrive.

Thank you for spreading good fortune to our staff, our space, and our community. Here’s to fresh beginnings, prosperity, and a year filled with abundance. 🧧🐉. Spread is open everyday from 11AM - 3PM.
