"The entangled timelines of coloniality, technology, and human movement are at the heart of Reverse Futures. Rather than disentangling them, the exhibition embraces their generative intersections, allowing for a non-linear reading of history, one that draws a plausible line between humans and cyborgs, or allows you to view processes of industrialisation and automation alongside political systems or the rise of empires", writes David Mann on the JCAF presentation currently on view.

🥽 Five immersive works from across South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi come together at the Futures_Past booth at @fakugesi from 14 to 17 October!

Visitors can experience VR from Kings of Lesotho: The Succession Story and To All Who Live In It, contribute to the @actsofcare_sa poster-making station, encounter an installation from We Are What Remains, and see a work-in-progress activation from Lucid Dreams of Sweet Water.

The behind-the-scenes video featured here follows the development of To All Who Live In It, a 360° immersive video installation created from apartheid-era 35mm film held by the National Film, Video & Sound Archives.

Here are a few pics from our recent Leadership Holiday Programme, where creativity, technology and critical thinking came together in exciting ways.
Guided by facilitators from @gaudi_labs and the @lodeffilms, our youth leaders learned how to build their own solar-powered light devices including soldering their own circuit boards and assembling functional systems. The workshop invited learners to think beyond solar energy as just a technical solution. By using the @lodeffilms method for speculative storytelling and creature design, The workshop participants explored how energy, technology and power are experienced and shared in South Africa. They also imagined how these resources could be harnessed for more just collective futures.

By combining imagination with practical skills, learners were able to connect creative thinking with real-world application, gaining both technical knowledge and new ways of understanding the world around them.
Swipe through to see some moments from the workshop. Thanks to GaudiLabs, run by Urs Gaudenz (CH) and Miranda Moss (ZA/CH), as well as the LO-Def Film Factory, run by Francois Knoetze and Amy Louis Wilson.

Out now: Issue no. 39 – Relationships

As we close our 2025 editorial cycle titled ‘Value Attachment’, this issue turns to ‘Relationships’: the emotional, political, and material ties that shape how we live, create, and resist together. The question is no longer whether relationships have political significance, but whether politics is even possible without them. From acts of collective defiance, to relational infrastructures of care and solidarity, to the calling out of complicity, this issue asks how connection itself becomes a site of struggle, imagination, and repair.

Contributions by Octavia Abril, Anuscheh Amir-Khalili, Knut Birkholz, Chicks on Speed, Clemente Ciarrocca, Sepp Eckenhaussen, Michel Esselbrügge, Will Furtado, Giulia Ottavia Frattini, Dina El-Kaisy Friemuth, Gaza Biennale, Gluklya, Tris Hedges, Russel Hlongwane, Lo-Def, Lo Höckner, Amelie Jakubek, Jean Kamba, Arturo Kameya, kina/ver.di, Francois Knoetze, Loop Barcelona, Dalia Maini, Julia Montilla, Diógenes Muniz, María Inés Plaza Lazo, Krishan Rajapakshe / Nachbarschaftshaus Urbanstraße e.V., Lilo Ruminawi, Spore Initiative, Catwings, and Amy Louise Wilson.
