✨Senior Spotlight: Laila Cleare✨

Native of Nassau, Bahamas. Laila had a decorated career at the University of Mary. Most recently becoming an All-American for the first time in the 60m dash. Laila was a conference champion in the 60m, 100m, and 200m dash in her career. She also holds the school records in the 60m, Indoor 200m, 100m dash and the 4x100m relay. Laila has been a four-time national qualifier in her time at the University of Mary.

I recruited Laila out of high school, she would’ve been in my first recruiting class for the University of Mary. She committed and changed her mind and went to another school. But as fate would have it she found her way to UMary eventually. I was excited to be able to coach her finally and the rest is history. Something that I always will always remember is telling Laila she should’ve came to UMary right away. She told me, “Coach, I think everything happened for a reason. God has a plan for us.” I really appreciated that response to me, it will be something I’ll never forget. I will miss her energy and laughter that she brought to practice every day. She made me a better coach by always wanting to find ways to help her improve. Finally in her senior season she proved what I knew all along, that she could be a great 400m runner.

Year 6 with this TEAM! Every year has been a special one with new challenges and triumphs. I reflect on another season feeling deep gratitude for what I get to do as a coach. It’s not work, it’s a calling. Purpose filled days, months, and years to help people be the best versions of themselves. Sports bring the about the goal to compete to win, this draws people, motivation, money into the sports we play all around the world. Majority of people now miss the main goal of sports. Where focusing on winning is actually what doesn’t matter. It’s the pursuit of excellence, the journey with those people, the failures or triumphs that help you learn and grow. We talk about the process, the consistency over time is what changes people for the better. What I am the most proud of is this TEAM, this culture, these people change lives for the better. Though we are not perfect, we strive for it, the byproduct creates personal greatness from within. Isn’t that what really matters? As we close this chapter of this TEAM, I just want to say thank you. For the memories, the belief in what we are trying to accomplish, the work put in, the performances that shaped you. You can’t hide in this sport. That is the beauty of it. We run, jump, and throw. Sounds pretty basic. But it’s not about that, it’s finding the true meaning through running, jumping, and throwing. The true meaning is LIFE. What we do in this life will echo in eternity. We find Greatness through Virtue.
