Dear strangers,

Before orientation, I was terrified.

I was starting over from scratch. A new city, a new hospital, new faces, and the daunting task of finding my place all over again. I walked through those doors with my purse and my coffee, focused on putting one foot in front of the other.

It took all of 10 minutes to realize this new place was my home and these new people are my family.

During every residency interview, one of the things I said mattered most to me was finding a program that felt like family. I just never imagined that wish would come true so quickly.

To my co-interns: thank you for turning one of the most intimidating transitions of my life into one of the best. IU truly hand-picked some of the most incredible people to train here, and I feel unbelievably lucky to be learning alongside each of you.

Looking around on our last day of orientation, I didn’t just see future physicians, I saw future leaders, innovators, and people who will change countless lives. The sky is the limit for every single one of you.

Thank you for welcoming me, encouraging me, making me laugh, and loving me exactly as I am.

Now it’s time.

July 1st has nothing on us. 💪🏽🔥🐥

Dive Medicine and SCUBA!!

Last weekend we got the opportunity to learn dive medicine from the best! Sam Haskell is the Indiana University’s Dive Safety Officer, a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer, a DAN Diving Emergency Management Instructor, NBDHMT Dive Medical Technician, and Assistant Director of Safety and Training for the IU Center for Underwater Science. Sam led the group through a classroom lecture detailing diving injuries from the most common ear barotraumas to the extreme arterial gas embolisms and decompression sickness.

Then we got to dive in!

With the help of Sam’s IU Underwater Science team, members of the Wilderness Medicine SIG got to try SCUBA equipment and dive around the IU Natatorium instruction pool for a few hours.

The invaluable knowledge we gained could help provide swift and effective care to divers. Such a fun and unique experience! Thank you so much to all that helped us make this awesome event happen!

We had the amazing opportunity to learn caving rescue and medical care from the best of the best! Jess and Anmar taught us the importance of safety and compassion when we are working to help those in caves! Anmar and Jess have a combined over 50 years of caving experience, spent time as national or central regional directors of the national cave rescue commission, and literally helped write the book on cave rescue.

A team of us made it safely in and around Buckner cave for approx 5 hours and learned various techniques to care for shoulder dislocations, hypothermia, ankle injuries, and communication necessary to get people out of the cave and to proper care.

We are so grateful to @iu_outdooradventures for supplying helmets and headlamps!

Stay tuned for our search and rescue training happening soon!

Once y’all get to the vid of me screaming the bridge of “All Too Well,” don’t ask who hurt me, just know I’m down bad.
