In his haunting and poetic performance Family Tree (2000), Zhang Huan turns his own face into a living scroll. Over the course of a single day, he had three calligraphers inscribe traditional Chinese characters—representing proverbs, family history, myths, and cultural fragments—onto his face until it became completely blackened. The work is a powerful meditation on the weight of history, language, and identity, showing how one’s past can become an inescapable part of the present self.

Lucy Liu’s curatorial vision strikes “a sophisticated balance between academic rigor and a drive to cultivate experimental art in unconventional spaces,” writes Clare Gemima. Recently, Liu organized the group show “Arcus” at Rachel Uffner Gallery to explore the arch’s formal and symbolic possibilities.

Liu also touches upon founding and running her pop-up curatorial project, Loft 121. Working with emerging and underrepresented artists who often experiment with unconventional mediums, Liu and her collective consider how to support and engage with local communities, exploring individual and shared identities and balancing personal aesthetics sensibilities within an “often unforgiving industry.”

It’s finally here!

Less Than Half and the Matrons of the Arts Collectors Circle will have a booth at this year’s @futurefairs, May 1-4 at Chelsea Industrial.

Each public day, May 2-4 at 4:30, I will host a “matronage salon,” a frank talk about why and how we should be collecting women artists. Link in bio for the complete list of programs and come by and say hi!

Thrilled to share this gallery walkthrough with @seanyunci, for @loft121gallery ‘s fundraising exhibition “bios, morphe”, curated in collaboration with @civilart.nyc
-
The exhibition explores how elements of historical Biomorphism manifest in contemporary artmaking, continuing to serve as a tool for making sense of oneself, and one’s position in the world.
-
The artists in the exhibition juxtapose absurdity with reality, presents familiar as unfamiliar, which reminds one of quantum mechanics: reality is a paradox, it’s subject to our method of questioning. It’s your sign to rediscover the world with the eye of a child, to re-establish the connection, and to LIVE a life.

Transformation and contradiction lie at the conceptual core of our group exhibition, Bios, Morphe, presented in collaboration with Loft 121.

The artists featured in Bios, Morphe dissolve the boundaries between the living and non-living, abstraction and representation, and the human and non-human. Contradicting realities come to life in Shuyi Cao’s aquatic and stony sculptures, while humanoid body-parts merge with and emerge from their environment in Craig Taylor’s paintings. Psychological states and emotion take physical form in Yujie Li’s watery paintings, while Japanese letters and characters transform into humanoid figures in Miwa Neishi’s ceramics.

Opening events are fun and engaging moments to build new connections and memories in our community.

We were delighted by the incredible turnout to our opening of Bios, Morphe on March 16 presented in collaboration with Loft 121 (@loft121gallery). Curated beverages were graciously provided by Ten to One Rum (@tentoonerum) and Lunar Hard Seltzer (@drinklunar) as we celebrated eight talented artists at Maison Mono (@maison.mono).

Civil Art also hosted a fundraising raffle during the reception with proceeds benefitting the organization. These exhibitions and events are only possible with the help and participation of our friends and community, so stay tuned for upcoming educational programming and events!
