“Taking these formal operations together, the Obama Presidential Center museum tower suggests that negation is not merely the opposite of affirmation but generative too. This perspective aligns most closely with apophatic reasoning: Something can be understood by stating what it is not.”

Thomas Kelley analyzes the Obama Presidential Center (@obamafoundation) in Log 67. Visit www.anycorp.com to get your copy. @log_grams

Excited to see “Walls as Luxury” in print in the latest issue of Log 66! @log_grams

This piece stems from my ongoing research into the informal spatial environments of vulcanizer shops across Ghana: focusing on these independent labor sites that actively sustain the tire industry.

Grateful to God and the team at @log_grams for bringing this work into the world.

Exciting to see summer RA work I did at @harvardgsd make it out into the world in @ebchristo beautiful piece for @log_grams, especially in the company of the inimitable Reyner Banham.

This diagram, produced during a summer I spent working with the Laboratory for Values in the Built Environment at the GSD (ViBE Lab), delineates, distills and categorizes the various layers of MEP and data services now customarily packed into buildings’ walls. The diagram envisions the wall as a mediator of the thermal, material and digital, a boundary that architecture typically assumes to be rigid and impermeable but which increasingly renders itself porous and reciprocal with the worlds it both contains and encounters.

Delighted to share that my essay, “Four Blank Walls,” has been published in issue 66 of Log, dedicated to the theme Walls.
The text revisits a little-known proposal developed by Herzog & de Meuron for the Deutsches Architekturmuseum’s 1991 exhibition Berlin Morgen: four monumental blank slabs positioned around the Tiergarten as a new geometric centre for a reunified Berlin. Rather than approaching the project as an unrealised object, the essay reads it as a provocation on boundaries, memory, authority, and collective space.
Emerging from a design seminar at TU Berlin @architecturetheorytuberlin – many thanks to @joerggleiter – last winter on Typologies of Transformation, the essay reflects on a moment in which invisible boundaries—contracts, logistics, access protocols, surveillance systems, property regimes, and environmental constraints—have become increasingly dominant. Against this background, the four walls are reconsidered not as instruments of exclusion but as architectural devices that make boundaries open to negotiation, ie transformable thresholds capable of accommodating future change ...
Many thanks to Cynthia Davidson for the invitation and to the entire editorial team for the opportunity to contribute to this remarkable issue. 🎉
The essay forms part of a broader body of work on typology, transformation, peripheries, and the ongoing Counterintuitive Typologies research programme, which has also informed recent publications, lectures, and editorial projects, including the forthcoming special issue Peripheries – Peripherocene of The Journal of Architecture.

No Man’s Land
Inkjet print, marker on archival print collage
2026

No Man’s Land is part of a new body of work, Formal Vernacular, rooted in the architecture of vulcaniser shops across Ghana: their materiality, precarity, and the economic forces that shape them.

Two essays written alongside this work: “The Vulcaniser Shop: Materiality, Precarity, and Informal Repair Infrastructures,” Thresholds 54 (MIT Press, 2026) @mit_thresholds @mitpress and “Walls as Luxury: The Economics of Informal Repair Shops,” Log 66: Walls (2026) @log_grams . Both available through their respective publisher pages.

The Vulcaniser Atlas (a live map of shops across Ghana and Burkina Faso) is now accessible through the studio website @afrobutylism (link in bio). There is a disclaimer on site worth reading before you navigate it.
