Here, the challenge was to score a short film using exclusively the free ‘Berlin Free Orchestra’ library via SINEplayer. That single-library constraint became an incredible creative catalyst—forcing me to manipulate timbres with altered attack transients and custom reverbs to build a rich orchestral space on a zero budget.

A major focus was balancing the score against the film’s rich sound design. During the fast-paced urban montage with rapid picture cuts, I crafted an agile arrangement that propels the movement without crowding out the organic city ambiance.

While my entry wasn’t selected (despite a brief moment of excitement when a system glitch accidentally emailed a mistaken winner notification! 😅), it was a fantastic creative exercise. Huge respect to Orchestral Tools!

Virtual Instrument Breakdown

Strings (Berlin Free Orchestra): Intimate sustained and pizzicato textures for handwriting scenes, shifting to driving ostinatos for the bike commute.

Woodwinds (Berlin Free Orchestra): Gentle swells capturing reflective brainstorming moments on paper.

Brass (Berlin Free Orchestra): Warm brass layers entering as visuals transition into open parks, lifting the melody with momentum and scale.

Percussion (Berlin Free Orchestra): Rhythmic accents locking in with train cuts, architecture, and traffic while preserving space for sound design.

Full Ensemble Climax: Full brass and strings swelling as birds soar into sunlight, resolving into a quiet tail under the oak tree.

MIDI Automation: Continuous CC1 (Dynamics) and CC11 (Expression) riding to inject natural human nuance into every phrasing.

Creating character themes that evolve as scenes unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of scoring. To give this scene from Brave its mysterious edge, much of the music is anchored around tritones, paired with a recurring 6-note “Fate” leitmotif that emerges across three contrasting moments—passed sequentially from solo cello, to French horn, and finally to full strings.

The Witch’s theme weaves eccentric woodwind textures with unsettling harmonic leaps to reflect her erratic energy. Keep an ear out for the moment she says “Trust me”—it is underscored by a stark diminished chord, musically signalling her deceptive nature right beneath the surface.

Strings (BBCSO Pro & OT Layers): Rich low-string stabs add dramatic dynamic accents, while BBC Pro desk legatos blended with Orchestral Tools’ Layers thicken the overall texture. Delicate solo cello and violin carry the score’s intimate narrative beats.

Woodwinds (CineWinds & BBCSO Pro): High-register piccolos, flutes, and oboes drive expressive melodic lines, grounded by BBCSO bass flutes, bass clarinets, and a rumbling contrabassoon for deep warmth.

Brass (CineBrass & BBCSO Pro): CineBrass horn sections combined with BBCSO brass desks deliver noble swells and harmonic support during key emotional shifts.

Percussion & Keyboards (CinePercussion): Bowed vibraphones, sustained suspended cymbals, and a delicate céleste introduce an ethereal, glassy shimmer to evoke the spark of magic.

Comment “SAMPLES” and I’ll send you a download link.

We have built the fastest sample discovery software on the planet.

5 milliseconds.

That’s how long it takes to preview a sound.

That’s up to 200 sample previews per second. 🤯

But this isn’t about speed for the sake of speed.

When inspiration strikes, every second matters. The last thing you want is to break your creative flow by digging through folders, reading filenames, or waiting for previews to load. You want to find the right sound instantly.

Vibseek Studio lets you search with your ears instead.

Your entire sample library is organized on a visual map where similar sounds naturally cluster together.
Kicks live next to kicks. Vocals next to vocals. Basses next to basses. Instead of guessing keywords, you simply explore, listen, and follow what resonates with you.

The result?

You rediscover amazing sounds you forgot you owned, stay in your creative flow, and find the right sample almost instantly.

Everything stays in sync with your DAW, so when you hear the one, just drag it into your project and keep creating.

Because making music should feel fast, playful, and inspiring…not like searching through folders.

It works with all DAWs like Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Bitwig, Pro Tools, FL Studio, Studio One, etc.

It is 100% safe and privacy first. Your data stays yours. We don’t transfer it and we don’t train any AI models with your data.

The most underrated feature in Logic Pro? Live Loops. 🤯Too many producers treat Logic like a traditional linear timeline, but Live Loops unlocks a completely different way to create. It’s perfect for:✨ Jamming out arrangement ideas dynamically✨ Trying out different vocal or drum combinations seamlessly✨ Breaking out of creative writer’s blockCheck out the video to see it in action! 🎹✍️

☀️“Honestly” Production Breakdown

This was one of the quickest songs made off of the new album that almost didn’t make the cut due to the album already being finished. Hope you enjoy this production breakdown! More on the way!

Sometimes it’s nice to just load up Logic, pick a lush piano patch, and see where your fingers take you.

Do you ever just hit record without a plan and let the music flow? I often find my best ideas come out when I’m just playing around without overthinking it.

For this improvisational piece, I paired the @spitfireaudio BBCSO Pro Piano with their AIR Studios Reverb plugin (specifically playing with the hall reverb and experimenting with different mic signals to build depth). Since I’ll probably never get to record at @airstudiosforreal, this virtual setup is definitely the next best thing!

How do you tackle your creative sessions? Do you plan every bar, or are you a hit-record-and-pray person like me? Let me know below! 👇
