“My interest is to bring in more young people to grow the field, with an emphasis on art but buttressed by other cultural components as well — literature, drama, music — so more people are looking at African-American art history.” - David Driskell

And Dr. Cheryl Finley has contributed to Driskell’s legacy within her career as an arts educator, historian, writer and leader. It was an honor to work alongside her beginning years as the Walton Endowed professor in the department of art and visual culture at Spelman and the director of the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective.

Dr. Finley has helped build one of the country’s most important pipelines for emerging Black arts professionals, scholars, and curators, connecting students from the world’s largest consortium of historically Black colleges and universities with leading cultural organizations and museums. Cheryl, Congratulations on receiving the 2026 David C. Driskell Prize ✨ 💐

Left last night feeling inspired and encouraged, surrounded by friends and colleagues who are transforming and contributing to Black art of Atlanta and beyond.

In this clip from the discussion between Lauren Haynes and Aisha T. Bell, Lauren asks Aisha about the significance of the connection between spirituality, ancestors, and science fiction. In response, Aisha sheds light on when she began to investigate the gaze, decodes the symbolism of the traps in her work, and explains what two-dimensionality versus three-dimensionality means to her. Click the link in our bio to watch the full artist talk.

Grateful for the emotionally moving performance this past Saturday at Atlanta Contemporary. In response to adrienne nieves’s powerful painting, the Spelman College Department of Dance, guided by Professor T. Lang, embodied grief, resistance, and survival in ways that words cannot hold.

nieve’s work, shaped by personal history and collective memory, became a living score. Through movement, the dancers translated urgency, rage, healing, and transformation into something deeply felt and shared.
Thank you to @tlangdance and the Spelman dancers for creating a moment that reminded us how art holds space for what we carry and what we endure. Still feeling the resonance. 💫
#AtlantaContemporary #adriennenieves #SpelmanDance #PerformanceArt #contemporaryart

Join us, Next Saturday ✨April 18✨at Atlanta Contemporary from 12 pm - 2 pm, for a live performance by Spelman College’s SDAN 320 Performance Repertory, choreographed by Artistic Director and Choreographer T.Lang💫
This work unfolds in direct response to artist ✨a’driene nieves’s✨engaging painting, “i find myself suddenly swinging between the enormity of this grief and the inconsolability of this rage that I can not seem to shake no matter how much I scream or flail my body in protest of all we’ve been forced to endure and witness during these years. Survival has become a prison and a gravity well swallowing me and all of our dreams whole, 2024”; as part of the exhibition “Unbound Narratives: Embodied Language”. Activating the space between visual art and the moving body. Dancers navigate presence, distance, and attention, inviting you into a shared experience of looking, sensing, and being.

This is not a passive viewing. It is an exchange.
Come witness. Come participate. Come move with us✨ #contemporaryart #dancereels #blackartexperience @tlangdance @addyebstudio @loh33 #curatorialpractice
