A Milwaukee based artist thinking about the messy means of being human.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

✨Here’s a recent tour interview with tristatespublicradio 🎧 Public radio is my favorite medium for interview. Our conversation lasted about a half hour, which was then trimmed into a tidy four minute segment. In the editing process the names of the contributing artists were shortened to the number eight, so here’s a BIG shout out to the incredible, talented and dedicated artists @novaczarnecki @celestazuchitl.arte @frankorthof @lizzylovas @jill.sebastian @bden.1721 @serenamade.art and @loisbielefeld ⚡️Thank you for each of your parts in all of this. Sharing images of your practice and your artist statements during my tour talk is a highlight and a crowd favorite💕 Another shout out to @lwvmilwaukee @lwvwi @persisterswi @girlscoutswise and studio friend old and new for your volunteer stamina and energy over 10 months bringing these big beauties into being. Audiences love seeing you all at work, trimming paper, gluing and laughing.

It has been an absolute honor to steward this artwork and our story to communities across Illinois, sharing how an idea was made into art and a community galvanized its creation. During the tour speeches and art workshops, my goal is to provide a slice of the studio experience and the harmony we created with communities across our beloved sister state of Illinois.

Thank you to the @lwvofil @healingillinois @ilhumanities @fieldfoundation for providing this opportunity. Your support of this work and this tour is broadening a sense of shared humanity during a dark moment in our nation’s history. I know it for myself and I can see it in the people coming to participate in the events. Voting is the key. No matter the gerrymander. No matter the tricks. We have the numbers. And we have each other.

If you’re in the Tri-State area go see the show! Pillars of Democracy: Unite and Rise is on view @galesburgcommunityartscenter through May 13.

If you’d like to listen to the full interview, visit TSPR.org and type my name or the name of the tour✨🫶🏼✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

Editorial bridal beauty gives us room to play with shape and tone. For this Wisconsin Bride feature, we paired softly textured waves with fresh skin and a bold lip that added just the right amount of contrast. 💄

We hope to see you tomorrow evening at Abel Contemporary for the opening reception of three new shows! The opening is Friday, February 27 from 5-8 and open to the public.

Showing in gallery no.5 Accumulation: a study of utility by Melissa Dorn & Lois Bielefeld
There is a pesky side to being human: the endless war against debris, the daunting organization of it all, the relentless nature of domestic labor. Yet within this cycle live tools that span history and cultures—the broom and the mop. Melissa Dorn has been working with mops as subject and material since 2015. Lois Bielefeld has been working on various studies (brooms, chairs,
and piles) since 2019. They have been in conversation about these ideas since 2016 and in this exhibit take these interactions further with an interactive, site-specific installation that inter-weaves both of their practices into something new. The experimental nature of gallery no. 5. offers these artists the unique opportunity to merge their individual works into a harmonious question—one that interrogates both the ongoing nature of domestic tasks and what an exhibition can be. Creating a new work that exists only through this collaboration Dorn and Bielefeld invite viewers to continue reorienting the work throughout the exhibition and become agents of chance.

Also opening tomorrow Modern Medieval - Jean Roberts-Guequierre, Adam Stoner, and Theresa Abel, Lush - Group Show featuring Jenni Brant, Craig Clifford, Lisa Frank, Deb Gottschalk, Rain Harris, Richard Jones, Debbie Kupinsky, J. Myszka Lewis, Dennis Nechvatal, Erica Schlueter, and Mike Stumbras

Big thanks to Lois for the fabulous documentation of our shared effort, so that I could share some of the images here.

We are proud to announce local Milwaukee photographer @loisbielefeld as a generous participant in our ISO print fundraiser! Lois Bielefeld is an established creative and commercial photographer, currently exhibiting their project its own pristine devices at Potrait Society Gallery of Contemporary Art.

Ramp I-41S, W National Ave, West Allis, WI 2025 from its own pristine devices
The United States interstate system is comprised of 46,876 miles of highways, enough to circle Earth almost twice. Within this massive and complex system of roadways, there are exits and entrances giving passage to people, goods, and services while carving many different shapes (clover-leaf, round-about T, diamond, etc.) into the landscape. As I navigated these curvy structures and my beat-up Hyundai’s headlights illuminated the curious spaces, I began to wonder about these freeway “islands.” Appearing as an afterthought or by-product, freeway islands are intentionally designed spaces with a function: they serve as detention ponds for both precipitation and road/vehicle-created pollution. Unintentionally, some of these spaces have become complex mini-habitats, completely surrounded by off-ramps, freeway, roads, and rushing cars. In photographing these locations, I am consciously aestheticizing these forgotten or un-appreciated spaces. Through the act of looking I am asserting value and acknowledgement.
