The wait is over… Meet the legend, Lolita San Miguel. ❤️Sometimes, we need to go back to our roots to remember where it all began.

This experience was exactly what I needed. A reminder of where we come from, why I fell in love with Pilates, and the importance of keeping its legacy alive.

A special thank you to my teacher and mentor, Jolita Trahan, for connecting me with this living legend of Pilates and making this unforgettable experience possible.

What an amazing celebration for @balanced_body 50th anniversary and Pilates on Tour in Sacramento. I got to spend time with so many people in my Pilates family. Grateful for this community and the opportunities I’ve had. Thank you @kenendelman for your friendship and all of the guidance for the last 37 years!

The legendary Lolita San Miguel. 💛 What a joy to sit with her this weekend at Pilates on Tour Sacramento and share a memory that has stayed with me for years.

At one of my first Pilates on Tour events, around 2009, I was the only person of color there. Unfortunately, no one had spoken to me. I took Lolita’s Reformer workshop, and afterward, she came over, placed her hand on my shoulder, and told me I was an amazing mover.

I was surprised—and I felt seen. In a space where I had felt alone, that simple moment meant so much.

During our conversation this weekend, I learned that she loves dancers. As a former professional dancer, I wondered whether that was part of what she recognized in my movement all those years ago.

To reconnect and tell her how much that moment meant to me was special. We may never know how long someone carries a few kind words. I’ve carried hers ever since. 💛

Day 1 of #pilatesontour was amazing! The energy, education and enthusiasm all aligned. 🔥

Workshop 1 — Beyond the Reformer: Progress with @shellyapower Using breath and engagement to level up your pilates game

Workshop 2 — Finish on your Feet @jcvitalitymethod Strength starts in the feet. Using foot exercises, specifically standing that affects strength, mobility and less pain in other parts of the body.

Workshop 3 — Shoulder Girdle & Spine @tommccook Techniques and movements to open up the chest, find mobility and strength in the shoulder taking into account body mechanics.

I also got to workout in Joe’s Gym which was setup with Contrology Reformers and simulated a drop in workout as if you were swinging by Joe’s studio. So fun to have @lesley.logan and @jcvitalitymethod give pointers and lead the “class” while everyone went at their pace.

We ended the day wishing multiple Happy Birthdays, including @lolitapilates who turned 92 and has been practicing pilates since 1958! A pioneer! Wrapping up the evening watching the first episode of Pilates Returns to Life a documentary by @pilatesanytimeus

Pilates elder Lolita, Sam Miguel ‘s GROUP A — THE ORIGINAL PILATES MASTER MENTOR PROGRAM

As Lolita San Miguel approaches her 92nd birthday, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary history of Pilates and the people who helped bring Joseph Pilates’ work to the world.

This photograph was taken at Frankie Owens’ studio, affectionately known as “Scoops,” with members of Group A, the original Pilates Master Mentor Program.

I had the honor of being part of that first group, studying under Lolita San Miguel, one of the few instructors personally certified by Joseph Pilates.

There was a time when the Pilates world was very different. Groups A, B, and C each had their own identities, and the Pilates Method Alliance conferences brought together people who were deeply passionate about preserving and advancing Joseph Pilates’ work.

Romana Kryzanowska believed strongly in protecting the Pilates name and maintaining the integrity of the method. There was concern that opening the name to broader use would allow Pilates to become too renegade and stray from its original teachings.

Yet there is another side to that history. Without opening the name and allowing Pilates to grow beyond a relatively small community, it is possible that the method might never have reached the millions of people practicing it today.

Lolita has spent decades sharing her knowledge, educating instructors, and helping preserve the work of Joseph Pilates while encouraging its continued growth.

As a second-generation Master Pilates Instructor, I am grateful to have been part of this remarkable chapter in Pilates history.

Formarme con ella significó mucho más que dar un paso más en este maravilloso Método Pilates.

Fui a estudiar con ella buscando más de lo que ya había recibido y me encontré con una mujer inmensa, con un corazón enorme y una mente admirable.

Encontré una maestra como la que necesitaba en el punto de mi carrera profesional donde me encontraba, alguien que no limitara el pensamiento, sino que me fomentara seguir siempre aprendiendo e integrando los conocimientos necesarios para honrar aún más un legado que ella se aseguró proteger plasmando de puño y letra en lo que sería nuestro material de estudio pero también pensando en las futuras generaciones que nos trascenderán, porque finalmente de eso se trata este camino, vivir, aprender, crecer, brindar nuestros conocimientos y experiencias a otros para ayudarles en sus propios caminos, ser felices y hacer felices a los que amamos.
