Adriano Zanni - Sequenze di Fabbrica

Adriano Zanni, a photographer and composer, explores the complex relationship between industrialization and the environment in Ravenna, particularly focusing on the ANIC plant. His project captures the melancholic beauty and alienating solitude of the industrial landscape through black-and-white photography and ambient soundscapes.
Zanni’s images reject the triumphalist rhetoric of industrial progress, instead portraying factories as decaying structures marked by abandonment and silence. His work is characterized by a sense of existential isolation, emphasizing barriers, deserted roads, and geometries of industrial forms.

The accompanying soundtracks, built from electronic sounds and mechanical noises, integrate fragments of dialogue from Michelangelo Antonioni's "Red Desert", further intensifying the theme of alienation and detachment. Zanni’s compositions recontextualize Antonioni’s melancholic vision, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

The project stands as both an artistic reflection and a historical document, offering a counter-narrative to the mythic origins of Ravenna's industrialization. It highlights the aesthetic and emotional legacy of the ANIC plant, capturing the duality of fascination and loss that defines the city’s relationship with its industrial past.

This year has been challenging, yet at times lovely, because of the kind and attentive people around me. Thank you, even though the world is on fire, I feel loved.
