Translation, influence of Asia on Aotearoa Art curated by @ginaferguson_art
Exhibition runs until 12 April

The Archway for Contemplating the Lost Aesthetics, Single Use Plastics and the Soy Monster Necklace
- 年年塑料鱼 Nián Nián Sù Liào Yú Every Year Plastic Fish

Statement re the necklaces and the larger installation on the stairs leading up to the folly:
The inspiration for this installation comes from the Heritage gardens of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China and the
Chinese idiom 年年有余 nian nian you yu. “May you have surpluses, prosperity and abundance every year”. The
idiom is often quoted around Chinese New Year as it references the fish which is traditionally eaten in celebratory
meals. The character 余 for surplus and abundance shares the same sound as fish 鱼 (yú). 年Nian the character for
year, is also the mythological beast which would terrorise villagers at New Year, which gave rise to the tradition of
letting off fireworks and displaying red to scare it away.
Suzhou generated immense wealth from its silk industry. Scholars and artisans flourished. Gardens became spiritual
and philosophical retreats where artistic expression and nature’s beauty were harmonised. Seats and pavilions were
ornately named with quite specific and poetic titles to contemplate seasonal transitions of wildlife or vistas improved
by transitions of the sun and moon. My installation calls to this tradition and questions why this 1950s relic of plastic
innovation is still in use.
