GR Iranna walked us through the works at his studio that will be part of Whisperings from Transcending Meadows, his new show which brings his reflections on material, memory and Bihar’s Buddhist history into view at the Bihar Museum from November 21, 2026, to February 4, 2027; it’s being organised in association with Gallery Espace. Iranna links the show to the 12th-century Kannada poet Allama Prabhu and the idea of bayalu: a boundless space or void where something can begin.

He spoke of a sprout or a single blade of grass as a sign of the future, and of nature’s cycles of renewal. The idea is rooted in his own life. He grew up in a farming family, studied in an ashram and gurukul, and remembers the smell of soil and mud, swimming in ponds and climbing trees. Poetry and music were part of that world, too. He said these childhood experiences are returning in the world he has created.

Ash and fire run through many of the works he showed us. He described layering charcoal and black ash, then scratching back into the surface so earlier marks remain faintly visible, a process he calls reverse scratching. He wants that fragility, and the sense of time held in the surface.

In one painting, red pigment over black ash brings into sharp relief the branching forms that suggest the human body and its network of nerves. In another work, terracotta powder gives a branch-like form the colour and feel of earth. Iranna connects this to the cycle of “dust to dust”. He wants the materials to carry their own stories, while leaving room for viewers to make their own.

The scale of a few works stayed with us. One features burnt khadaon (wooden footwear) associated with spiritual seekers, and has a charred but wall-like and monumental presence. Another is a huge ash work with dark, branching forms against bursts of yellow. Iranna described the ash as floating on a river, an image that suits the way the branches seem to drift and spread across the surface. Tall columns of stacked black bowls and a sound installation are part of another work centred on the bhikshu patra, the Buddhist monk’s begging bowl.

A campaign that became its own canvas.

For Swati & Sunaina Gold’s Alchemy of Light, photographer Pranoy Sarkar takes the original campaign imagery beyond the frame, translating it onto fluid silk and reimagining it through movement, sculpture and form.

The result is a visual dialogue between photography, fashion and textile art, where the image becomes the material, and the material becomes art.

Some campaigns deserve a second look. This one became a second artwork.

A campaign OfNote, naturally.
