What we did on our Tattie holidays 🍂 The most unbelievable magic dream day 1 in the Fisherfield munros, followed by a less spectacular but still beautiful day 2 after a very windy overnight camp (reminder to bring guy ropes next time oops!). Before heading to Speyside for a lovely and cosy week in Nethy bridge, running in the Gorms, autumn forests, mushroom picking & Saunas. Heart is full! ❤️

🍲 What do you eat when you climb Kilimanjaro?

One thing we learnt on our June expedition is just how important food becomes when you’re asking so much of your body.

Our Tanzanian mountain crew honestly fed us like kings and queens! After hours of trekking, we’d return to camp to find proper, nourishing meals waiting for us. Think soups, chicken, vegetables, rice, fruit and plenty of fluids. ❤️

But here’s the tricky bit. The higher you climb, the less you might fancy eating, even when your body desperately needs the energy.

@lucykellynutrition , our nutritionist, helped us understand that fuelling isn’t something you leave until you’re hungry or exhausted. It starts long before you set off, and continues throughout the trek.

We used @veloforte energy chews roughly every two hours, with energy bars and electrolytes helping us keep on top of our fuelling along the way.

And on a challenge like ours, it’s not just about having enough food. It’s about finding what works for your body, practising beforehand and making sure you can keep going when things get tough.

Our mountain crew played such a huge part in making the expedition possible, and it’s something we’ll never take for granted.

There’s a lot more to climbing a mountain than putting one foot in front of the other🏔️

Would you have expected to eat this well on the Roof of Africa?

Back where I belong, though my quads would argue differently today.

Descending is such a mental game and I feel out of practice. I used to fly down without thought or care in the world and now all I can think about is getting back safely to Flora. Doesn’t help when your brain is addled from sleep deprivation. Constantly breaking wrecks the quads and I swear makes me more prone to slips and trips, yesterday I had a full face splat in the mud requiring a river wash on the way down. Shoes with worn tread doesn’t help but finding something that can cope with the hard packed forestry, wet rock and mud is always tricky.

On the upside I feel like my ascending is stronger than ever, probably thanks to hauling the extra 20kg of Flora and pack uphill on the regular.

More practice required, bring on the winter ❤️‍🔥

My little brother but in reality my big brother. 🥹

So incredibly grateful to be your sister @bfbshatch. ❤️
So grateful to have spent my birthday with you.
So grateful to have shared the joy of completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge together. So grateful to have met so many wonderfully kind and inspiring people.

The BEST day. 🦖🦖🦖

Hours and hours of chat and laughter!! It’s always been like that. Morning chats on the way to work. Evening catch ups. Little messages back and forth. Tuesday was special as we rarely get 3 whole days together ❤️

Give us your best guess on how long it takes to inflate 20 dinosaur costumes on a mountain in the rain - include the time it takes to take off your boots because the stupid thing won’t fit otherwise!! Ready, steady, go …..

Support and encouragement, that’s a given both ways. He’s one of my biggest cheerleaders, always has been. If I ever have an idea to do something and doubt myself, he’s always the first to remind me that I can do anything I put my mind to 👊

If I was anywhere in the world and needed help, I know he’d find me.

Peak 1 - Whernside. The camaraderie is strong. The jokes are flowing. The laughter is loud.

This is fine. It’s not too cold. No one minds being wet. The weather is going to change. Who cares there are no views, we will soon! Stage 1 is bonding time. We are friends on a mission. How hard can it get? 🤷‍♀️

Goodbye Black Sail … 💚💚💚

This time last week we left Black Sail YHA to head back to Buttermere following a hearty bowl of pasta, a few glasses of red, and a deep sleep 💤 the night before and then a full English 🤣

An easy climb out of the valley we made the descent down to the lake, stepping aside numerous times for fabulous young people heading up the path as part of the DofE Gold badge. The sun finally came out which was lovely to be rewarded with some views before our long drive back home.

A quick bowl of soup and hot quiche @crofthousefarmcafe and our little two day break came to an end. 😭 It was a taster for more to come next year with our sights set on a few more Wainwrights in that neck of the woods.

Buttermere YHA to Black Sail YHA at the top of the Ennerdale Valley.

A day with 875m of total ascent and 720m of total descent and three Wainwrights bagged, Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag.

Weather wise we started ok, we checked and double checked the forecast but in the Lakes it can change in a minute. By the time we conquered the steep climb up Red Pike the mist and drizzle set in hard. One dead phone (locked out 🤪) and one phone with no signal, out came the map. With no compass and no visibility, setting out in the right direction after a sandwich sit down was eventful !!

After a little hissy fit and a few swear words we took the path south east using the tiny glint of the sun to guide the direction. We followed the boundary posts and path across the entire ridge checking our drenched map here and there.

Steep climbs, slippery downs eventually reaching Scarth Gap Pass where we dropped down into the valley and the welcome sight of Black Sail YHA.

It was great day. Sadly no views which was a real shame. But it’s hard to feel anything but elated when you are tromping around the Lake District chatting, thinking, moaning, laughing for 6 hours covering only 9 miles!

Sometimes the things that are easiest to cancel are often the things we need to do most. 🌿🥾🫶

I finish work at midnight.

My daughter looks at me and says, “You can’t drive to Wales now.”

“I can.” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🚙

Because I made a promise 🫶

@bluewilsonartist and I have followed each other for two years.

Blue started walking the UK coastline back in 2021. Covid put a halt to it for a while, but she picked it back up and has carried on ever since.

She’s doing something enormous. Walking mainland Great Britain AND the Isles, section by section, fitting it around work, life and all the other s**t that being human brings with it.

We’ve never met. But we both said we would. And today is that day. 🥳

And f**k me, it would have been so easy to cancel.

Sometimes, of course, we need to and have to. Yet I’ve realised that often the things that are easiest to cancel are often actually the things we need to be protecting.

The walk. The conversation. The person we keep meaning to see. The slightly f**king ridiculous idea that makes no practical sense but makes us feel completely alive.

So I’ve driven to Wales.

And there she was….within minutes we’re talking about pooing while trekking, anxiety, perimenopause, men 😂 and the wonderful number of women walking their way around the UK. As Blue said ‘We’re like some brilliant, batshit crazy long distance walking family’

Different women.
Different reasons.
Different ways of doing it.
All putting one foot in front of the other and discovering a little bit more about ourselves along the way.

And somehow a woman I’ve never met before feels like someone I’ve known for years. 🙏

Two women.Two different journeys.

One enormous coastline with so many memories made at different times .

I’m so pleased I protected us meeting @bluewilsonartist 💙

I’m a woman of my word 🫶

Until we trek again very soon 🥾🥾🌿

Live it. Be it. Feel it

BARRANCO CAMP → BARAFU CAMP 🏔️🌿

This was when Kilimanjaro began to feel like a real high-altitude expedition.

The Barranco Wall was a full-body experience.

Indiana Jones.
GI Jane.
What the actual f**k am I doing? 😂

Then you reach the top…

And everything changes.

The rocks disappear from your mind as you look out across endless clouds.

For a moment, it feels like you could fly.

We each found our own quiet place to take it all in.

Grateful to be here.
Grateful to be alive.
Grateful to be sharing it.

Then came the alpine desert.

Scree.
Dust.
Exposure.

And suddenly, the differences between us became clear.

Same mountain.
Same altitude.
Very different experiences.

Some hungry.
Some nauseous.
Some exhausted.
Some still flying with excitement.
Some quietly beginning to struggle.

And that’s when we learned:

A team isn’t about everyone moving at the same speed.

It’s about understanding what each person needs to keep moving safely together.

Then Barafu.

Four hours sleep.

Up at 12:30am.

The next time we’d see the mountain would be in darkness…

And the summit?

In sunlight. ☀️🏔️

Summit Every Feeling.

DAY 219.
STEPPING AGAINST LIVING MISERABLY – @calmzone
SKIPTON / LEEDS - 17.01KM
Raising money via @justgiving

3,719KM covered.
57,695M climbed.

1,997KM to go.

Split the days run in two, first stepping before a game of padel with pals around Skipton. Then back to Leeds to get the daily distance done.

Safe to say the fatigue had me after this… pretty much slept all Friday and deep into the morning today. Must of needed it 🫨😅🤣
