Dance artist Alanna Kraaijeveld has worked in the contemporary dance milieu for twenty years as a performer, teacher, and artistic support. She teaches nationally, at professional dance training institutions, festivals, organisations. For several years, she has been hosting dialogic practice initiatives that happily assemble different practitioners, materials and disciplines. Examples include wrestling and voice work (Susanna Hood), judo and storytelling (Catherine Lalonde), clay sculpture and dance, approaches to improvisation with Yves Charuest. These channel her artistic inquiry and connect her with artists of different ages, experience and creativity. The practice ball is a tool I encountered in Fighting Monkey Practice. It is a ball on a string. It offers a dynamic context in which to align and make precise our technical work. It is also very playful, and so disrupts notions that play and serious work are different and separate ideas. These classes center as an approach to try or test, to share, and to support, all through dances with the practice ball. Collaboration – of our structures or bodies, with objects, with partners – is of value. The aim is to expand our physical capacity, nurture our elasticity, and release tension, move and explore with greater awareness of of how dynamic contexts unlock our ability, and support our development.

Pulling from their practices of Open Source Forms and Action Theater, Susanna Hood and Sarah Bild will guide participants through physical and sensory awakening of the body/mind to prepare for creative practice. Inviting breath and imagery into the physical self, we will open ourselves to our physical and metaphorical environment and practice noticing, tending to and following creative impulses as they arise, opening a dialogue between inner experience and outer awareness. We will develop short studies, share them with the group and learn to speak about what we see. How do we move from the playground of creativity, the free generating of material to creating meaning in performance? How does one impulse invite another? How do we give shape to those impulses? What are the structural possibilities at our disposal? How do we embody them for full expression? How do we frame them in space and time? These are questions we will investigate and experience in the afternoon hours.

This “work-in-progress workshop” (aka WIPSHOP) is a space to practice shortening the distance between the practice and performance of movement improvisation…and in this iteration….music improvisation as well! The framework and technology employed during WIPSHOP comes from street dance culture. In Krump, it is known as a session and in other dance styles it is called a cypher. We will take turns sharing our freestyle in the midst of the group, giving each other lots of love and encouragement as fuel using body, breath, and voice. While WIPSHOP typically employs recorded music, the “UNPLUGGED” session is an opportunity to include singers and musicians in the fold, and for movers to explore free-form sound-making. Musicians and dancers alike will participate in generating a simple base of sound using bodies, voices, and instruments, which will serve simultaneously as our hype and our music. Please bring any instruments you would like to use! #printempsalapoele #WIPSHOP #danceandmusicimprovisation

It reflects all the work we’ve poured into this space. All the conversations we’ve shared with you, the tireless efforts of the artists who inhabit it, and what emerges, fragile yet powerful, from the encounter between artists and audiences. If the MAI is so vibrant, it’s thanks to everything that surrounds it. Audience members, visual arts enthusiasts, artists from all disciplines, board members, collaborators, and partners from here and elsewhere. You are what makes the MAI. The cultural scene exists first and foremost through artists, and through those who choose to engage with them.
