Typography shapes how we read, what we notice, and even how ideas spread. Yet the history of type design is still largely written in a male voice. That’s why I’m celebrating “Women & Type / Call for Flags*”at Museum Wiesbaden. The exhibition brings together 18 international positions that approach typography from very different angles — visually, conceptually, politically, playfully. For me, there was plenty to discover as a graphic designer and art director — and seeing the work of Rejane Dal Bello, one of my personal design idols, was a particular highlight. I also love the conceptual idea behind the flags: displayed within the museum, yet designed to leave it, too. Placed along Wiesbaden’s famous Wilhelmstraße boulevard — they bring typography into public space, making the exhibition impossible to overlook. There’s good reason for that visibility. Women were excluded from printing workshops for centuries and only began gaining access to art schools and professional networks in the 1920s. Equal footing didn’t follow automatically. Many of those historical imbalances are still reflected in who gets seen, commissioned, published and remembered. Women & Type / Call for Flags*

‼️ DATE CHANGE to 27 September: ‘Plain Language as Poetry’ is a workshop facilitated by Loraine Furter and Florence Cheval, in the context of the research project ‘support sCRIPtures’. It is a space for D/disabled and chronically ill community to slow down and slither together. In this workshop, we will aim to shift our attention towards a specific form of writing: plain language. Plain language is writing that is easy to read and understand. Plain language makes content more accessible to everyone. “Plain language is an attempt to help more people understand ideas that matter,” Sara Luterman wrote, in the introduction to the plain language translation of ‘Disability Visibility’ by Alice Wong. First, we want to approach plain language creatively: the more people find plain language interesting to use, the more it will circulate and therefore spread ideas and artworks in an accessible way. Second, we want to encourage disabled people to make their own way of using plain language, to seize this language practice, in order to make disability culture, arts and activism accessible for more people. This workshop will take place Sunday 27th September at Het Bos in Antwerp. More information and registration at the link in bio of @collectiveaffinity. Part of Halaqat – funded by the EU, implemented by the Goethe-Institut. @lorainefurter @practicesoftrying @het_bos @halaqat_project @goetheinstitut_belgien Image description: A photograph of a workshop situation. Meet Florence Cheval and Loraine Furter 💙💜 Florence practices artistic research & writing while, at home, peer-supporting two neuroqueer youngsters with chronic conditions. She explores feminist, queer & crip modes writing, publishing and translating in the field of contemporary arts. Florence is a member of celador, a ‘space for doing things with words’ in Brussels, Belgium. Loraine is a graphic designer and researcher specialized in editorial design, hybrid publishing and intersectional xfeminism. Loraine is co-founder of the typography collective Bye Bye Binary, and founding member of the cyberfeminist collective Just for the Record. She is a PhD student at Sint Lucas Antwerpen, researching encounters between artists’ books and intersectional feminist tools. Florence and Loraine have worked together since 2019 on ‘Intersections of Care’, a research project on intersectional feminist modes of display and curating. The project was initially supported by FrArt/FNRS and Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. ‘Intersections of Care’ was exhibited at Wiels, Brussels, in the context of the Open School of ‘Risquons-Tout’ exhibition. Florence and Loraine are now working on ‘support sCRIPtures’, an artistic research on image description as a creative and collective access tool.
