POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Just finished reading this gorgeous historical novel and can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a powerful and lyrical fictional retelling of real events—the massacre of adult males in the Patawomeck tribe of Virginia in 1666, the enslavement of the tribe’s women and children, and the eventual return of a few of these women that enabled the tribe to continue to this day. Not easy to read, but the voices of the two women who escape and find their way home seemed completely authentic—never a word out of place—and the author’s research into her tribe’s past, the experience of slavery in Barbados, and the laws and customs of 17th century Virginia and New York was impressive. For readers who love historical fiction, check out 1666. #histfic #bookstagram #sibyllinepress

So fun to be on the town last night with Cori at the KPBS One Book One San Diego Pitch Party! Thank you for inviting us again Jenelle and KPBS. We pitched books we loved even if it is always exceedingly hard to choose between so many great books! And I loved running into Annie, a bright light wherever she is.
You too can pitch a book online until March 15!

1666: A Novel by @lorajchilton
An important, yet devastating and brutal read, “The survival story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia has been remembered within the tribe for generations, but the massacre of Patawomeck men and the enslavement of women and children by land hungry colonists in 1666 has been mostly unknown outside of the tribe until now. Author Lora Chilton, a member of the tribe through the lineage of her father, has created this powerful fictional retelling.

Told in first person point of view through the imagined lives of two women, Chilton tells the harrowing stories of Ah’SaWei WaTaPaAnTam (Golden Fawn) and NePa’WeXo (Shining Moon), members of the surviving Patawomeck tribe, who after the slaughter of their men were sold and transported to Barbados via slave ship. Separated and bought by different sugar plantations, they endured, each plotting their escapes before finally making their way back to Virginia to be reunited with the few members of the tribe that remained.”

Can I get a round of applause for My Picks for Women’s History Month 👏🏼
I may be bias, but I think women make the best writers. The prose, depth, and intimacy of each of these books on my list is incredibly moving, and have had a vast impact on me. This is in no way an exhaustive list. In fact, I believe I may have to do a few posts for capture the diversity, range, and breadth of women in literature.

1666 by @lorajchilton
I have been wanting to read this novel for some time now, and I’ve finally gotten up the courage. 1666 is a powerful and brutal fictional retelling of the survival story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia through the imagined lives of two women. After the slaughter of their men, they are sold and sent to Barbados’ sugar plantations as slaves. Each plots their own escape, making it back to Virginia to be reunited with the few members of the tribe who remain.

I think this novel is so important to read, because for so long, the history of the Patawomeck and what the English settlers did to them was covered up and hidden. The state of Virginia didn’t even recognize the Patawomeck tribe until 2010. They say history is written by the victors, but now, finally, we get to hear the courageous story of the Patawomeck through the vivid, captivating retelling by #LoraChilton.
