POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Lady G
Loft Haven, October 22. 6:00 am
Woke in that wakeful way we do on days like today.
Not just another day in the office.
Quiche in the oven.
Oranges sliced, ready to revitalise a River we named.
Candle lit.
Early morning darkness lingering longer.
Prayer station vibes on couch and fabulous.
Settling into memory keepsakes.
Eyes closed.
Heart pumping.
Tears filling and falling.
Releasing and being.
Face softening.
Ears listening.
Freeing myself for a moment to drop in.
The fabric of your grace.
The tender touch of your hand in mine.
The eye-to-eye knowing without saying.
The depths of our shared being-ness.
The creation story.
The visioning of futures.
The hunger to make real.
The piecing.
The piercing.
The process.
The trust.
The truth.
The mapping.
The beat.
The birth.
The personal.
The universal.
Rooting hearts.
Finding true.
Earthing real.
Soaking in mystery.
Desert blue, silver you.
Our love.
Together, we returned to the artistic nature of the body.
We unlocked that door and headed feet first
to the other side of all that we know.
We never looked back.
Me, forever reminding you of your brilliance.
You, reminding me of mine.
I was your Lone Star.
You, my Aquarian partner in crime.
We were excellent cheerleaders for each other.
You with your baton, me with my whip.
We rode well together.
Range riders of storms and unforgeable wonder, heading out to see.
Wild-hearted visionaries, daring to believe.
We found each other.
It was meant to be.
Over and over and over again.
Forever.
— Lorca

What is a Soul Note? If you were to answer that question, what would you say?

Last month I was part of a beautiful ensemble that devised a piece of theatre called Soul Notes from the Velvet Elk under the direction of Lorca Simons. We performed it at Hip Pocket Theatre -- my happy place. It was extraordinary.

I've been wanting to share about my experience, but it wasn't until I gathered again with a handful of my Soul Notes friends over the weekend that I was able to find my words.

Rehearsals for this began right as I was wrapping up final negotiations for my divorce. They weren't going well for me. I couldn't afford a lawyer; I was representing myself, and all the trauma from the DV I’d experienced had me in a very triggered, very not okay place. I'd already been extremely isolating myself for awhile and didn't think I could bear to be around anyone, but I'd signed on to this project months before.

One of the themes that started coming up in rehearsals from the very beginning was connection. But at first, while others were already beginning to talk about how instantly connected to one another they felt, I was disconnected. I felt inadequate. Afraid. I couldn't trust anyone. Because of the way we were creating this piece of physical theatre, of moving poetry, we needed to talk about what level of physical touch we were comfortable with. Between my activated trauma and my hEDS causing me a lot of pain, I said I was pretty much not okay with any touch. I absolutely didn't expect that to change.

At the beginning of our second week of rehearsals, I had my court date and got divorced. I lost custody of two of my kids forever. It was unbearable heartbreak. I'm still certain I'll never be okay again.

The creative process is rarely tidy.

It is awkward.

Uncomfortable.

Unexpected.

Tender.

Sometimes hilarious.

Sometimes terrifying.

And occasionally...

Pure magic.

We call it a prayerformance.

Because sometimes theatre is more than theatre.

Sometimes the body remembers something the mind erased.

Sometimes a story becomes a doorway to forgiveness.

Sometimes being seen is its own kind of medicine.

Mother is not one story.

Mother is not one body.

Mother is not one experience.

Mother can be love.

Loss.

Birth.

Absence.

Rage.

Nourishment.

Longing.

Ecstasy.

Mother is…

Somewhere along the way, thirteen women stopped being thirteen women.

They became an Ensemble.

A group animal body.

A chorus of hearts.

A strange little ecosystem of truth, tenderness, chaos and creative devotion.

This is what happens when we make art together.

In chaotic times, we need places where humans can still feel.

Where we can laugh.

Cry.

Move.

Remember.

Imagine.

Art doesn't erase the mess.

Sometimes it gives us a way to walk through it together.

Take thirteen women.

Add nine months of vulnerability.

Stir in poetry, dance, grief, laughter, memory, rage, tenderness and a whole lot of improvisation.

Let it cook.

What emerges?

Theatre.

Ritual.

A prayer.
