On Friday, May 16, 2025, I had the honor of receiving the Dr. Terrence Daniels Memorial Award during the Drexel University School of Education Honors Day Convocation.

This award was established to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Terrence Daniels, a proud EdD alumnus who was deeply committed to equity and social justice in education. It is presented annually to one current EdD student who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to disrupting systemic inequities in education.

To be selected as the 2025 recipient—during National Foster Care Awareness Month—is incredibly meaningful.

As someone who has personally experienced the foster care system, my research centers the counter-narratives of Black boys who have aged out of care and earned their college degrees. Too often, their stories are overlooked, their voices silenced, and their potential underestimated. My dissertation work is about restoring that narrative—about highlighting their resilience, brilliance, and agency in a world that too often tries to define them by deficit.

I am deeply grateful to my dissertation chair, Dr. Kristine S. Lewis-Grant, for nominating me for this award and for walking alongside me every step of this journey. Thank you to my full dissertation committee, the award selection committee, Dr. Hill, the EdD program faculty, and my entire support system—your belief in me and in this work has carried me through.

This recognition is not just mine. It belongs to every young person who has felt unseen in systems that were never built with them in mind. It belongs to those fighting daily to challenge injustice in education. And it is a reminder that I am exactly where I need to be.

The work continues.

By God’s grace, I’m still running my race, and although I was detoured and delayed, I was never denied. Cheers to this next chapter…and all the ones I’ll document, write, and rewrite along the way! #PhDLoading #AfricologyAndFilm #TempleUniversity #GoOwls #BlessedBeTheJourney 🎬💡🎥🎓🙌🏿
