#inTheMix song “Soul Food” (1995) | by @goodiemob

The Planning Committee + SoBD Board and Founders worked really hard, behind the scenes to design an experience that felt like “good ole’ fashion soul food.” And it was an honor and a pleasure to be a part of those conversations and planning. The work that nobody saw steered clear of being a cookie-cutter event that merely copied and pasted the experiences from the previous two, while respecting the essence of both the in-person and the virtual events. Design showed up as a cultural practice rooted in people and place. The vision was revisited and protected with care and intention because the SoBD Community depended on coming home to “the soul” we had previously provided them with, just in a new setting.

To that end, speakers, panels, and visuals were all framed to invite a feel of “Yo’’ Mamma’s House” or “Big Mama’s House” (and no, I am not talking about the movie either). Folks spoke freely, participants called and responded as they should, and topics stayed connected to what the people could relate to. The space made room for authenticity without ignoring the social realities and shifts around us. Designers spoke through the lens of their personal experience, stood on their perspectives, which kept the messaging attainable because it stayed human.

As for @soapvamu – Faculty and students hosted SoBD with so much love. At NO point did I, or hear of anyone, not feel like they were “home” – including me. The Southern Hospitality made way for imagination to reside alongside safety and warmth. Those moments stayed with me. They continue to shape how I structure learning environments, facilitate conversations, and design experiences that “soul food” served up by the SoBD.

…More mixtapes in the tape deck. Stay tuned.

#inTheMix song “Gotta Get It” (2025) | by @reubenvincent + @9thwonder

Design work starts with community. It begins with learning how to enter a space that already holds memory, rhythm, and intention, and holding the reality that “people have been doing dope things, living their best lives, and making fresh music, products, art, WHATEVER…well before you arrived on the scene.”

The @stateofblackdesigntx offers proof of that. The evidence lives in the environment, the people, from the badges, to the stage – we are so fresh, and so clean, and you gon’ learn today. This design comes to life in the conversations you have while walking across @soapvamu campus, in how people gather, listen, and speak, CREATING a “State of Black” experience.

Design work showed up as culture, community, and practice intertwined. It lived in language, gestures, and the presence. SoBD speakers and panelists brought depth, clarity, and truth. Conversations centered on Black designers as thinkers, educators, makers, and builders – past, present, and future. The value of the work was already understood in the room.

Each session added texture. Knowledge surfaced through vulnerability, transparency, academic grounding, technical skill, and community practice. The field expanded through shared language and mutual recognition, but also provided a blueprint for participants. Design was represented as something that simply exists in Black spaces rather than something discovered in isolation as a “rare sighting”

The space + the people reinforced the reality that “design lives in the community OF US.” It moves through US. Those who know where they come from, why they build, and who they build for. This intention to be in the same room together shaped interactions and direction – it was about WE, not ME.

All this was front and center for my new group of @dschool student designers to experience: @_ja.ziah_ (Ja’Ziah Woodard) @lordington (Lord Crawford), and @iamhillarylo (Hillary Lodzanyama)
